OMG!!! I sat in MGT 948 during my campus visit. I thought it was Securities Analysis but it's Valuation too, due to integration.

Thanks for your message. Can you please tell me the core class Prof. McAvoy teaches? In the website, the core classes don't have prof's name alongside.

Hi, I am admitted in R1. Just want to know that when SOM will do background check and send I-20 form to R1 international students? Does the school do them for all R1 admitted students at the same time? Or one can do them first right after submitting the deposit and get I-20 asap.

Thank you & Happy New Year!

I am looking at My SOM Portal for core classes and I don't see him listed. Not sure if he is teaching any core classes in the Spring. Not all professors teach every semester. A lot of professors do research when not teaching.

Regarding I-20 form, I am not international student, so i have no idea how that works. You should contact the school directly.

Regarding the background check, that usually comes later. When I was admitted, I think we all did our background check around April. Not sure if YSOM changed that last yr, but if not, you will probably get it later on in the Spring.

Hi,

Can anybody tell me how difficult it is for international students to land an internship/job in IB from Yale SoM?
I have already been admitted to class of 2013. When I was going through the chat transcript of Finance chat organised by Yale SoM I found that one of the moderators mentioned "finance (investment banking in particular) tends to be more open to non-U.S. permanent work authorization students". Does that mean international students not having work authorization find it hard to get internships/jobs??

I have decent experience in M&A advisory in India having closed around 4 mid sized transactions (both cross border and domestic) and have advised on many others.

Also once in USA do students need to work on their own to get work authorization or recruiters assist in this?

Thanks

Hi guys, I noticed that in the application system my GMAT score has been verified, but TOEFL score was still "self-reported". The truth is that I required ETS to send the official score to Yale SOM three months ago...How can I fix this problem before the round 2 deadline? Thank you~~HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!

Nink, just for clarification: Are you saying that the background check will be around April and not in Feb/March immediately after accepting the offer of admission? I am hoping the Adcom will not contact my employer till mid-April, at the earliest, which is when i will be ready to inform them of my departure. Thanks for all you help again, and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Well, when i went through the background check 2 years ago, i swear I did it either late Apriil or early May. (I got into YSOM in R1) I am not sure if they changed this or not. (my guess is that it may be earlier because 2 years ago, R1 notification date was month later than what it is now) Maybe shadowsjc (or another 1st yr student) can confirm when he did his background check last yr.

According to adude's post from last yr, he cleared his background check around late March/early April.

Well, I would recommend that you contact the admissions office first because (before we can rule out that maybe ETS failed to send over anything) sometimes, the office may have the score but they may have not reflected that in the application system (it's manual). Admissions office won't hold anything against you if you call. Just call and say that you would like to verify the info reflected in the application system before contacting ETS to sort out any issues. They will help you out.

Ehhh, I interpret this as - if you have any kind of work authorization (VISA, etc), it may not be a problem?

Anyway, on the internship/job issue for international students in IB. Traditionally, all the big banks just want to hire top talent regardless of his/her status. The situation got worse in the last couple of yrs due to recession, but the hiring is going back up in banking, and as long as they are fighting for top talent, they will hire international students again. (Tech firms and big banks are two of the biggest sponsors for work visa, etc)

But for other jobs, international students will have difficulty regardless of which school he/she attends. Sponsoring international students = more cost for employers, and unless job market returns to pre-recession level where demand for talent opens up more opportunities for international students, it will be tough.

On the admitted students website, it states (for R1 admits):

Background Verification:
By Thursday, March 10: Verification authorization and fee due.

Apparently there are more details to come regarding this process in early Jan.

Happy new year everyone!

Happy New Year everyone!!

Thanks nink for your reply. Can you also tell me how are the current job and internship placements going on for the international students of class of 2011 and 2012 respectively?

Will it be appropriate for me to call up and speak with CDO on the subject??

I appreciate nink's honesty. Regarding i-banking recruitment, if the banks are still not caught up with the TARP money, then only can they recruit international students. There are only a handful of big banks who have paid off their TARP money <GS & JPM to name a few>. Your visa affect won't affect your chances for internship but for full-time jobs where you need H1-B visa, that's where things will get tough. Pre-recession, i-banking was the hotspot for international students but post-recession, I've seen a friend who was pursuing i-banking go back to his pre-MBA employer.

Also, H1-B visas are based on lack of skilled professionals in US, but now US professionals are even willing to take the pay-cut. Gosh, they're eating all our jobs  Yes, they really are!

Hi gaga,

did some number crunching and linkedin research to get to the bottom of my apprehensions.

1). First I wanted to know what is the approx. number of students going into pure IBD (read M&A/Capital Markets) jobs from Yale SoM....I understand that not all jobs displayed in investment investment banking industry are IBD jobs, they include operations/research/wealth management, etc........during my research I found a posting on businessweek forum (link: https://forums.businessweek.com/n/pfx/fo ... w-bschools) on which a loyal Yale student took the initiative to confirm the exact number of students going with various employers in IBD for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007 (combined). The numbers are below:

Lehman Brothers 14
Credit Suisse 12
Citigroup 10
JP Morgan 10
Merrill Lynch 9
Morgan Stanley 6
Bear Stearns 5
Bank of America 5
Goldman Sachs 4
UBS 4
Total of Top Ten 79
Total 135

To get pure IBD numbers just divide these numbers by 3 (for per year data) and then by 2 (approx. no. of IBD jobs in IB industry). Now of this list Lehman is now Nomura/Barclays (depending on country), Bear Stearns is gone. Of the remaining ones UBS and Credit Suisse didnt take any TARP money.

Also mid market M&A advisers like Houlihan Lokey recruit which I dont believe were part of the TARP program.
As per my understanding currently only Citi has not returned the TARP money. Rest everybody has or never took the aid package :)

2). As I am pretty much without work during this time of the year...I did a linkedin search for former/current students at Yale SoM with a background similar to mine (read Indian/undergrad from IIT (popular Indian undergrad school)). I found several past students who are currently working in IB and some who are currently enrolled at Yale SoM and have done their internship at an IB.

I dont know what to make of these numbers and facts....but they certainly do provide a small peck of hope and an opportunity to do what I want do :)

In any case as econometry often says "if you look at numbers for long enough....patterns begin to appear". So maybe I am hallucinating or plainly being gullible .... cant say that :)

Hope nink can provide some insight!
