I know, it's so funny how when you go back and read the historical blog posts, you'll have Dee saying that there are still "many" or "a lot" or "a significant number" of interview invitations that go out after the first day. I wish one year they'd define "significant" because if their version of significant means that 50 of the 850 invitations go out after the first day of the deadline, then that's probably not all that encouraging.

Based on what is published about the HBS admissions process, at least 2 people will read through your whole application. My guess would be that there are a certain number of applications that receive a passing grade from both readers, and those are probably the majority of applicants that are invited on 26 October. Then the following two weeks of invites are probably composed of the applicants that one or more readers had differing opinions on, so they are passed along for further evaluation before being offered an interview.

This is my completely unscientific opinion, and goes completely against what Dee Leopold says in her blog, that there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to how the interview invitations are handed out.

Does anybody know if they do phone interviews? I live in Colorado so not near any of those locations and will most likely be in Norway on business for a large portion of the interview period.

I don't think they do. HBS only uses 20 or so interviewers and they are very strich about this.

I'm in Sao Paulo, thankfully. I guess everyone from Latin/South America will have to come down here.

Where is everyone else from?

Bangalore.. and they're not coming here for R1 :(

For R1, they're going to New York City, Palo Alto, London, Paris, Dubai, Sao Paulo, and Shanghai. In case you're not able to attend in any of the mentioned cities, you will be skyped or have an alum interview you..

It totally beats me why they're going to the UAE and not coming to India. May be proximity to both African and Asian countries. It is highly probable and almost certain that they'll come here for one of the other rounds. Bombay has traditionally been there choice but I guess last year they came to Bangalore as well..

Nope they don't. Either hub city, on campus in Boston, or video conf via skype...these are your three options. Also I believe they stopped doing alumni interviews long back.

Hey, Bangalore too!

Yeah, I had to read that line twice to make sure they were not coming to India. I thought the number of applicants from India were on the rise. Any chance that they will update that list?

Well I guess the next list will only come out for R2.. However, it is possible that they make a change in the existing list depending on the invites, ie, if they see that there are more interview invitees from the subcontinent, they may as well decide to accommodate India.. The truth however, shall unfold after 26th :)

Ah! Even I am surprised to hear that there is no visit to India especially Bangalore. Wondering why!!! If they are going to interview through Skype, I hope that has the same impact as a face to face interview. I would any day prefer a face to face :-( .

Totally agree. A Skype interview simply won't be compelling. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Happy to see so many Bangalore applicants here. When we get admitted, we should meet ;).

In the past, the adcom has made a change in their travel plan. And guess which city they added? Yep. Namma Bengaluru

Lets hope a lot of applicants from Bangalore are shortlisted for interview.. That'll make the ad-com consider visiting our lovely city to conduct interviews :)

Congrats to all who submitted their application for Rd1. Huge accomplishment in and of itself! Loved reading a lot of your essays...especially the Why MBA essay...so inspiring!

After working your tails off for the last few months, you might be tempted to chill out from now until you hear back from Admissions...DON'T! Go out and do the things you said you wanted to do!

******

For those who are targeting Rd2, here is a snippet from an interview with Dean Nohria in the most recent HBS Alumni magazine. Nohria is being asked about the three "modules" of the new FIELD program. Reveals what HBS values in students and, by extension, applicants.

"What value does FIELD add to the first-year students' experience?"

[Dean Nohria]
"We all agreed that there were three areas in particular in which we wanted to improve the capacity of our students.

First, we wanted to improve their leadership skills....in particular, enhancing students' emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
...
Module Two, global immersion, aims to develop students' capacity for contextual intelligence...we can make them better prepared to operate in a globalized world.
...
Module Three is designed to integrate what students have learned throughout the first year. We're going to do that in the context of a start-up where teams will design and launch a new venture."

Per my feedback to a lot of you, your essays need to demonstrate EQ! For example, that means taking responsibility for your mistakes (in the SETBACKS essay)! I mean, truly owning up to your mistakes and not blaming others.

You need to demonstrate that you can handle different situations, e.g. if you're a consultant, write about DIFFICULT CLIENTS, CONTENTIOUS MEETINGS, etc!

Lastly, write about innovating! Doesn't mean you have to work at a start-up. DOES mean you have to write about leading new initiatives at work, extracurriculars, etc! Make sure HBS knows that you're someone who challenges convention and not a highly-skilled robot.

Lots of good stuff you can glean from articles like this from HBS Administrators. Good luck to all the Rd1 applicants and get ready TO WORK YOUR TAIL OFF, Rd2 applicants!

I just realised that I forgot to double space my Essays :( How strict are the Adcom with formatting guidelines? Will this mistake of mine considered a negative point?

I believe the explicitly state single space so you should be fine.

Ah you are right. I was writing Stanford Essays and noticed that they ask for double spaced. I assumed Harvard also asks for the same. Just rechecked on Harvard page. They ask for single spaced. Such a relief!! :-)

These stupid mistakes never get out of the mind!! Got to move on...
