I hope things have changed and HBS is more open-minded about industries.

I am the minority of the minority of the minority. Women, young, latin american, Jewish, communications/marketing. I did well on college, work on a top 3 company of my sector and got a 700+ gmat.

I'm not saying I'm a great candidate. But I'm very unique. I'm not very qualified in quant. So if HBS just pretends to like different people of different sectors but in reality they go for the traditional finance/consulting/engineering then I'm def not making it to the interviews.

I have personally heard mixed reviews. Some people say Harvard will love a different profile, others say adcom sticks to the safer profiles. I guess we'll see.

I just caught a silly error in my work experience section for HBS. Got to carry on and worry about the other apps.

Good luck.

you're right, what's done is done. Energy is best spent positively! Good luck!

I read through a couple of interviews by Nitin Nohria and I do see him quite proud of the new FIELD course that he has introduced. With that they seem to be focussing more on entrepreneurship and getting students to experience starting a company.

But I am sure they'll still take in a huge set of safe candidates - 750+ GMAT, Mckinsey and likes.

In my personal opinion GMAT does not matter so much in case of HBS unlike for Stanford or Wharton. However, when we speak of "safe" candidates, the reality is that these folks are really the cream and are in mckinseys and like because they have already gone through the "selection" process. Of course that does not mean that you and I don't have a chance but given everything else being equal, HBS will of course take someone with a more proven background.

My personal take on this is that if HBS does not take me, it is their loss, not mine. I will be successful in life not matter what. And if you think the same, HBS or not should not matter.

Disclosure: Yes, I have a 750+ GPA and No, I have never worked for a Mc, BCG, Apple or Google. I am a humble agriculturist.

I'm told that's the formula for getting in. HBS wants candidates that don't need it to succeed.

Guys, all you have to do is look at the breakdown of the backgrounds of c/o 2013 vs c/o 2012. From what I remember, there is a signficant decrease in financial service types and a significant increase in those with manufacturing backgrounds and one or two other backgrounds. I applied last year in R2, was int, was WL throughout the summer and ultimately denied :\

MESSAGE FROM HER ROYAL HIGHNESS ABOUT HBS ROUND ONE INTERVIEW INVITES --
Quote:
•October 26 - November 9: Interview invitations will be issued via email. Please read this part carefully - We don't have some complicated and/or malevolent algorithm that determines which interview invitations go out first or last or even how many go out on any given day. If you'd like to suggest one, give me a call.

HONEY, I am not going to give you a call, but if what you have been doing for the past 10 years is any guide, invites are front ended, with a couple of spritzes right after Oct 26th and then they peter out, altho never 100 pct. Anyway we can see.

Round 1 Interviews
Date: October 04, 2011
I know that the feeling of triumph from submitting an application can be short-lived - and gives way to Phase 2, the "Anxiety of Waiting about an Interview." Please be assured that we are in full-scale reading mode as of this morning - all hands are on deck. Let me walk you through Round 1:

•October 3: Deadline for receiving applications has just passed.
•October 26 - November 9: Interview invitations will be issued via email. Please read this part carefully - We don't have some complicated and/or malevolent algorithm that determines which interview invitations go out first or last or even how many go out on any given day. If you'd like to suggest one, give me a call.
•November 9: All candidates not invited to interview will receive one of two communications - "We are unable to offer you a place in the Class of 2014" or an invitation to join our waitlist.
•November 7 - approximately November 29: Interview weeks, both on and off campus. Off campus locations in Round 1 include New York City, Palo Alto, London, Paris, Dubai, Sao Paulo, and Shanghai.
•December 19: Decision notification (admit, deny, or waitlist) for all interviewed candidates.

Now, I need to repeat language I used last year because I can't think of a better way to say it. While no one applies hoping for a "deny" decision, we have heard you say that the worst case is extended uncertainty. We think that getting news out on November 9 is helpful so that denied candidates can re-direct energy toward Round 2 applications to other schools. Yes, we have the resources to ensure a thorough review of all applications before rendering any decisions. All applications are reviewed at least twice. Our Admissions Board is fully staffed and able to make this work.

All those invited to join our waitlist are candidates whom we would like to "further consider." Our plan is for waitlisted candidates to receive further consideration in Round 2. Our intent is for all to receive a final decision by the time we make Round 2 notifications in late March. We completely understand if such a candidate might elect to withdraw his/her application.

I promise that all letters will clearly communicate a candidate's status.

Most of all, we thank all Round 1 applicants for all the hard work and high aspirations that go into these applications. We are humbled and committed to doing our very best to give all candidates full and careful consideration.

Do Interview Invites really come in 2 weeks?

Am I the only one not confident at all? I dunno... all the hard work, GMAT of 700+, essays... and then when you see that PDF it just seems so... bland?

Anybody else have any input on messing up on a part of the application form? It's a really small glitch but I keep thinking that might keep me out.

Just submitted H and W and now just so beaten up to finish the other apps.

Am I the only one with all these thoughts??

I was wondering about the same too :-D I guess we just keep our fingers crossed.

Guys, I have a question.
I'm 28 yo, made senior manager in b4 this year. Is it usual/unusual in US?
I'm trying to figure out how to best position my we against age in application.
Also, I'm coming from Central Asia region, and haven't heard HBS admitting from here. Any thoughts if that be of advantage or not?
Thanks!

Its a good accomplishment, dont worry about how usual or unusual is in the United States, that accomplishment is part of your story and very related to your work experience, so you will have to include it wether it is unusual or not. I am not sure abou the Central Asian region not admitting anyone from there, I think someone else in this board mentioned that India and Asia are the international groups with greatest representation in any class, but again, that should not mean you dont stand a chance. I hate this cliche that every adcoms comes with but "you have your story to tell," (whatever that means), and certainly you can spin things so that you stand out from other central asian applicants. How are your grades and gmat?

I haven't sit GMAT yet, now working hard on it. Going to give a first try in November and than second try in December if results are no good.
I got into mba race just recently, understand that this is very late. But at the same time what I see is that next year it maybe too late for me to apply when I will be 29. Realistically My chances will go down.

Aim for a 680+ on your GMAT. If you can get at least that score, you should spend the bulk of your time on your essays.

As I've written before, the difference between spending 20 or 100 hours studying for the GMAT might be the difference between a 650 and a 720. Not as big a deal as everyone will have you believe.

The difference between spending 20 or 100 hours writing your essays will be the difference between a crappy essay and poetry. And THAT will make or break your application.

This is especially true if you're a "unique" candidate as many people have written on this blog, eg. female, agronomist, latin america, etc. HBS cares more that they've picked someone who will truly add color to classroom discussions and will overlook that you can't calculate WACC in your head.
