Yeah you don't see too many airline folks around campus but you do see plenty of operations folks. We've got petroleum engineers, defense ops, car people, supply chain guys like me, etc.

Eskimo thanks for your insight! When you say "not too many airline folks", how many do you actually know of in your class or in both classes who come from an airline? more than 50, less than 50? maybe not even 10? can you shed some light into this?

Your remarks are highly appreciated Eskimo, thanks for sharing this with all of us!

Probably around a dozen folks who worked in the aerospace industry and less than that who specifically worked for an airline. I'd guess half a dozen.

Wow half a dozen!! so few... mmm wonder why given that airlines are often used as operations management and operations research examples. I will cross my fingers and hope to be invited or waitlisted this wednesday.

Can you be waitlisted without being interviewed by the way? Other schools do, so maybe I am assuming too much by expectinig HBS to do the same. anyone knows?

Hey, it's just my estimate. We actually have had a couple cases already on airlines. Airlines are typically viewed as bad businesses to run (high costs, low margin, lots of competition, etc.) but that's why successes in this industry are really great learning lessons for us. Best of luck!

Sandy calls the entrepreneurs as oddballs and feels they very rarely get a chance at HBS.

Yikes, then I am a goner. I am even more of an oddball with my weirdass profile. However, I believe Wharton favours candidates with business backgrounds and especially those from family businesses.

Also, I remember reading that HBS actually respects entrepreneurs; although, that respect need not necessarily translate into an admit.

Even I am in the same boat as I am an entrepreneur. Well until and unless you are an entrepreneur who has raised million of $ in funding, I don't think HBS gives too much attention.

Lets see what the next two Wednesdays have in store for us.

I'm an entrepreneur who was admitted to a top MBA program. I knew a couple dozen other entrepreneurs at my school and peer schools (HBS, Wharton). Some had succeeded tremendously with their businesses, a few others had failed. The key is to have a compelling story about what you learned and what you plan on doing with your MBA education. Best of luck!

What's on tap for tomorrow? Do we get dings by email or do we have to log into applyyourself? Are folks expecting information by noon EST or earlier?

You are dinged through a change of status in apply web, though you get an email stating that your decision is now available. You are also waitlisted through this same method so at this point your decision is either rejection or waitlist.

What we are looking for; desperately looking , slithing-our-wrists-just-with-the-hopes-of-it looking for,is that the email you get tomorrow does not have as a subject "your decision is available"

I have stocked Ice cream and doritos as if a hurricane was comming to town in preparation for tomorrow's hit on my morale...

I hate this need for validation from HBS. The anticipation of an HBS invite is preventing me from prepping for the Wharton interview and is simply messing with my head.

Lol. I hear you. My dad just called in a jokingly tone asking if tomorrow was going to be interview, release or waitlist day. I guess he read Dee's blog?

I have to say I'm a lot calmer really. I will accept my 'release' with grace and move on to prep for my other interviews. In the end, this is a numbers game and we apply to more than 1 school because it's hard to get in everywhere. It just stings a little more when the ding comes from HBS. Specially because IMO, that was my strongest application.

That said, who will be in the chat tomorrow? Will be fun times!

Good luck to everyone!

I am calmer alright. Fantastically, I have been sleeping well for the past 3-4 days!

Same here: My HBS application was by far the strongest and therefore it just hurts just that much more. However, we have to accept that HBS receives absolutely fantastic applications and even though we may be the top 1%, we may not be the 0.1% kind which HBS needs, which is alright by me.

Definitely in for the chat!

My understanding was that of those interviewed, 60% approximately are accepted. If we accept that the overall acceptance rate is 11.24% and that the number of applicants is sufficiently large from this board to allow the law of large numbers to apply as a representative sample of the full population (which seems to roughly be the case) then we know the following:

.60 * of all interviewed = number admitted
number admitted / total applications = percent admitted = 11.24%
percent interviewed = all interviewed / total applications = all interviewed / (number admitted / 11.24%) = .1124 / (number admitted / all interviewed) = .1124 / .6 = 18.7333%

Given the sample size of 190 in round 1, we would expect about 36 invites to interview from this board. However there have only been 26 invited thus far. Unless this sample has deviated substantially from the norm, it stands to reason there are 10 more invites out there for next Wednesday for people on this board alone.

At least, that's what I'm telling myself.....

yes, but there are many more int'l applicants in the gmatclub database, which means that both sets arent equal, so we cant extrapolate the admission rate of last year.

For those fortunate enough to get an interview with HBS, I highly recommend the Harbus HBS Interview Guide. I'm totally biased since I write for the Harbus but I'd probably say it's awesome even if I wasn't totally biased... I think. Oh and mention that Alex sent you... It won't get you any discounts or anything but maybe it'll give me a little more street cred around the Harbus office. :-D
