I just don't get it, how is a profile and essay good enough for Ross but not for Kelley, why do they have to decide (read assume) that we are keeping them as a secondary option? Why can't someone even after having the best profile have Kelley as his/her priority.
Well... there are some schools of thought about dings of qualified candidates. I remember an applicant who got into HBS but got dinged from Anderson years ago... Was a case study of unfairness

and made every single dinged applicant feel a lot better about their dings.
This was not due to the fact that they were not "good enough" for Anderson and good enough for HBS but rather Anderson knowing this person would not attend unless they got a huge scholarship + more money and likely would still not attend. Instead they may choose to offer the money to someone who would love to attend their program and not put another ding into the yield ratio. Schools often have a pretty darn good sense if you are their target, their stretch, or a safety. Then they work hard to convince people to attend their program. Even thous who got into Ross, likely applied to Fuqua, Tuck, Darden, and Stern. In case of the Anderson applicant, they applied due to their location (LA Based and wanted to have a local option to consider... they did not need to with an HBS admit and others as well.)
P.S. To add, situations like these (Admitted to HBS and dinged at Anderson) happen VERY infrequently. This was a situation from 5 or 8 years ago and it is still the most memorable. The next most memorable after that was 2019 when a Haas WL was admitted in R3 with $80K in scholarship money.
