Will retaking the GMAT help? I only have a 730, and a crappy 3.0 UG GPA (though my masters GPA is a 3.5). I'm wondering if I should spend a month studying, and take it before mid-Feb.

I think it would look better to the AdCom if you spent that time volunteering/focusing on professional development. It seems that AdCom is looking for signs of applicants' good judgment and common sense, and I don't believe either trait is demonstrated by spending time and money on retaking the GMAT when you already have a great score!

Not sure how I can spend my time on professional development - my office isn't the sort that allows me to take charge of things I believe in or care for. I didn't get either rec from my current workplace, actually. I'm at the top of my peer group, but leaving for bschool is viewed somewhat negatively here.

As for EC/volunteer work, I've killed it with ECs on my app - I'm in four very significant leadership roles with well-known or international organizations. My EC commitments cross 20-25 hours a week, on average, and I do things on the scale of raising $100K every year and/or feeding entire villages in Africa. They all tie in directly with my career goals. So not sure what more I could do with ECs here.

Not being defensive, guys. Just looking for what I can do to make myself look better. Kellogg's my dream school, and it hurts a bit right now. :(

Maybe consider getting an admissions consultant? (if you don't have one already). They can help you craft a letter reaffirming your interest in Kellogg and highlighting everything you can bring to the table. That's what I would do...

Right there with you Tyra, dream school and all that.
Close to 30% unemployment in my industry, it's unlikely I'll get promoted. Not sure what to do either.

Too many factors, ranging from personality to goals. Sometimes a school may think you don't fit their "profile". It's hard to say. I guess that's where a ding/waitlist analysis from a consultant would help.
