Is 5%-10% over the word limit acceptable at MIT?

I swore that yesterday I read about this in the 2010 MIT thread, and because I'm a nice guy I went back and grabbed the post for you. One of the few admits reported 10% over on the cover letter and all essays.

I'm having trouble figuring this out... I'm applying for the MIT & HKS program and the deadline for the round is early January. In fact it is the only one available. If I turn in my application for MIT by the October 26th deadline, will they review it or wait until round 2? I'm applying concurrently to both, I'm not a current student at HKS.

Asked this at the info session... They will not review the application until the Jan. deadline.

EDIT: A couple more things I learned.
Reapplicants are looked upon "very favorably" at MIT.
Their evaluation process is completely based on past behavior as a predictor for feature performance. Evidently they "can't use" anything in the application about the future (5-10 years out) as a basis for admission.

What a nightmare. Sloan/HKS is my dream combo, but is it worth pushing all applications to R2 or eating an R1 deposit? Grrr.

Yeah, this is really killing me. The admissions officer did say she would keep my application "nice and safe" if I turned it in early...

Re: Calling all MIT Sloan Fall 2011 Applicants! [#permalink]
Hi guys,

I've got some questions about the MIT application.

1) About the cover letter, we are required to "Describe your accomplishments and include an example of how you had an impact on a group or organization".
The issue I see is that I may overlap my accomplishments written in the CL with the essays' stories. For example, one of my accomplishments fits perfectly well in the essay question 3. And it is likely that in the 2nd question I will use another of my accomplishments described in the CL.

Should I use different strategy? or it is fine to repeat things? Could I write something like "please see question 3 for more detail"?

2) I have a big story for question 1, but the problem is that it occurred 5 years ago. However, it had great impact in myself, personally and professionally. In fact, my career has been influenced for that decision and I think it is essential to write about it as it shows them a lot about who am I.

Do you think it will be a big issue to write about something that happened out of the 3-years period? I could use the additional essay to explain why I decided to write about it.

3) I have a third recommender that I'd like to add in the application. Do you think the fact of using an extra recommender may hurt me or otherwise help me?

4) About the 50 lines of the CV, it does include the "empty lines" or only the written ones? Do you think it is fine to go over the limit a bit? I have 54 written lines of the CV submitted for other schools...

Thanks a lot and good luck to everybody,

rid

While looking for some cover letter guides,
I stumbled across this guide from none other than the MIT itself.
https://www.mit.edu/~career/guide/coverletters.pdf

Hope this helps to everyone :) (Consider Kudo :-D )

I am trying it hard to make it for Rd 1. Starting with the cover letter. Though, about the rest of the three essays, I am pretty sure as to what to write. So Cover letter is biggest hurdle for me. Wish me luck

RID82, I just went to a Sloan information session last night in DC. The presenter from the adcom addressed this specifically. She said "I know that you are able to upload more than two letters of recommendation in our online application. Please don't."

She went on to say that they will only look at two recommendations, and you won't be able to pick which two.

Hi co-applicants, I am planning to visit the school sometime next week. The website says, just drop by our offices. But am wondering if i can drop a line to the admissions office to give a heads-up. Is it a good idea to send an email to the generic admissions email address about my visit?

Many thanks.

If you can, register for the Ambassadors Program for the day you'll be visiting. It combines an information session, a class visit, and a free lunch with students.

Thanks. I did check that - but there's no Ambassadors Program Session before the R1 deadline - so will visit on my own.

I see the majority of schools asking why MBA, why now why us..on the face of it MIT approach makes sense, afterall who can predict the future? As long as you have demonstrated abilities should that not be enough? I guess schools also look at placeability so if they don't think they can place you for whatever reason that also comes int play? I also found that te cover letter of 500 words is insufficient, I understand the letter is supposed to be short but then if you want to cover why, how, what, accomplishments, impact and them some school related stuff in 30 lines that is not much at all! The businessweek sample is 800 words... I guess that just want all material to fit 1 page, so all that effort is for 5 pages - resume, cl, and 3 essays!
