Update - Just scored a Q45/V35 on MGMAT #4.

Sure, I'm a bit inconsistent, still those 2 Knewton quant scores seem pretty low and out of whack vs. the MGMAT & GMAT Prep scores.

I thought the MGMAT quant sections were more difficult, no? Am I the only one that is cursed by the Knewton quant section?

I've just finished the Knewton Online course, have the last CAT to complete this weekend. I've found you can't trust the scoring splits, but the total score seems to be quite accurate. I haven't scored better than a Q46 on Knewton but my two GMAT Prep scores have been Q49. I think it's just a difference in the scoring algorithms. I feel the content is quite similar. However, I've come across quite a few more geometry problems in the GMAT Prep tests.

Basically I'm saying all this to say, don't worry about the splits, the total score is more important as well as reviewing the type of questions your are getting wrong.

I totally agree...when I got that 39, I tried to take it for what it was worth - an unofficial practice test. Went through the same procedure of review I would on any test, learn from my mistakes etc.

But at the same time, when I scored 47 on MGMAT earlier in the week, then 49 on GMAT Prep the day before, it definetely put a bit of doubt in my mind. "What if Knewton CATs are the most accurate?" "What if the 47 and 49 are the outliers, not the 39?"

So of course I had to take another MGMAT CAT that night to quell (or exacerbate) any anxiety. Got the 45, which was significantly closer to the 47 & 49...plus that was my second test of the day and I went to crossfit between the 2 so I was dead tired..glad I did it...as it calmed me down a bit. Now have to figure out how to ration the rest of my MGMAT CATs between now and Nov. 23.

As you can probably tell, I'm way overthinking all of this, but hey, it's what I do. Hopefully all this worrying will get me to my target.

Hi guys,

I'll take the GMAT in exactly 6 days... a bit stressfull actually. And this is the biggest part of my work currently: try to handle that stress and not let it bring me down.
After taking a blank Kaplan 6 months ago to know how is the GMAT like (got 450), I did spend most of my time working a lot on the basis: review math and grammar concepts, get used to CR and analysis of arguments.
I started taking practice tests last week and mys score are... horrorfull!
Kaplan 540,
Veritas 500
MGMAT 530

But the crazy thing is when I retake the questions with no pressure, I have most of them correct, and almost all correct in quant. So I definitely have to focus on time management for the test.
My advice: do not work too much on the last days, focus on your strenghts and review your mistakes. I did take MGMAT 2 two days ago and felt asleep twice while doing it... got 410 then, which is bad of course but I do not really consider it.

Best of luck to all of you, to all of us... the GMATicians!

Hi all,
I am giving my GMAT on Nov 15. Aiming for 700+ but we'll see.
I gave one MGMAT test till now and scored 650 ( Q45 V34) I was pretty shocked by my low verbal score. And a lot practice still needed for Quant.
I will try and post my last 15 day strategy/updates in this thread

I finished half of the OG 12 RC questions yday.
Plan to start CR questions today and finish the rest of RC tomorrow.

I've been taking the Knewton Online Course and couldn't recommend it enough. Definitely a big help.

Knewton you say?? I took the Knewton CAT and scored 700 (Quant - 45, Verbal - 42).. and scored 690 on GMAT Prep II yesterday (Q-47, V-35) and am all confused... Am not really sure Knewton CAT is a true reflection of the score... Is the Online course better?

I also want suggestions on what other CATs I can take.. I have exhausted the GMAT prep, MGMATs and Knewton... Would like to take one or 2 more CATs to get an idea about my actual score before the actual one, any ideas?

Hi
I'm taking the GMAT in November as well and targeting 700 +
Could you pls explain how to take Knewton test in their website (knewton_com/gmat/free/practice-test/ free)?
I've spend a lot of time trying to find a link, but unfortunately haven't got it

Hi all,

I was taking my GMAT next Friday (4/11) but found I was scoring too low on the GMAT prep due to not preparing properly (life issues). I rescheduled it within a month later, on the 2nd of December so I'm close enough :)

My strategy? Going through MGMAT books and OG12, then going to do 2-3 practice tests a week and maybe look into purchasing some advanced quant materials. Good luck everyone!

Hi folks

I will be taking the GMAT on 19/11 (Saturday). I've completed OG12, Manhattan Strategy Guides, Aristotle SC and Powerscore CR. I'm currently practicing on timing and speed by giving tests. I've not been very consistent but scores have been ranging from 660 to 700. I'm targeting a 750.

All the best to everyone appearing in November.

Cheers

I took my final Knewton CAT yesterday, and I got a 39.

This morning, I took GMAT Prep 2, and I got a 47.

So Last 7 CATS have been:

MGMAT 3- 47
Knewton 3 - 39
GMAT Prep 1 - 49
Knewton 4 - 39
MGMAT 4 - 45
Knewton 5 - 38
GMAT Prep 2 - 47

Still a little concerned about the low Knewton scores, but I just thought I would throw that out there for people using Knewton CATs as prep.

I will probably take it the week of the 11th, haven't scheduled yet but my local test center is hardly ever busy so it shouldn't be a problem. The program I plan on attending has a 550 minimum, but I'm hoping for a 650 or so.

I made a thread for this question, but will post it here as well in case any of you can help me:
The school I'm hoping to go to needs my GMAT score by November 11th in order to evaluate my application for the spring semester, which is 12 days away. If scores are sent electronically right after I complete the exam, I can take it much closer to that date. If there is some processing time and the scores are mailed to my school, I will have to take it within the next few days I'd imagine. Does anyone know how it works?

I am really unhappy with my Quant score...the 700+ score seems like a tough goal now.

I am struggling with SC in the verbal section. When I am reading the MGMAT guides; everything makes sense and I can apply all the rules and logic correctly. But during the CAT all that goes out of the window and I end up going by the ear to solve SC questions...anyone having similar issues?

I do have the same issues.

The way I think about it is like this.

1. Read it to yourself and see if sounds awkward. If it sounds awkward, it probably is wrong.
2. Look at verb tenses and for parallelism issues. This is common for many questions. "I went to the park, ate food, and gave my dog a hug" is grammatically correct while "I went to the park, eating food and will give my dog a hug is not." I hope I'm right there.
3. Pronouns must clearly indicate to which noun they are referring to. That's a tough one for me.

Took my last Knewton CAT yesterday. Another 710 (Q45, V44). Without pushing my studying to another level, this seems to be my ceiling. In the last 6 CATS I've had 4 at 710 and 1 at 720. Although I think I performed better on this test as I didn't miss as many questions. Also, my biggest weakness in the Quant section is making bonehead mistakes which I only had one of yesterday.

I have my second GMATPrep #2 attempt on Wednesday and then the real deal on Saturday. Feeling good, albeit nervous.

Thanks for the suggestions.I try and follow similar rules for shorter sentences and they work pretty well.
I seem to make the most mistakes when the sentence is lengthy.

Have a look at this one from MGMAT :

Stymieing the Armada’s plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma’s army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as “fireships,” vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

When I read that one ^^, I was like :?:
Longer sentences tend to completely disrupt my pattern of logic and rules.Any tips for longer sentences like the one above?

Initially, When I started out , I had similar problems. I have followed this approach and feeling more comfortable day by day :

    1. Break the sentence into its clauses. It helps me a lot in understanding the meaning of the sentence.
    2. Remove junk ( like prepositional phrases ) and look for Subj - Verb errors. then look for pronoun errors.
    3. If sentence deals with multiple actions, I look for a hint in regard to sequence of actions. It it exists, I look for Verb-Tense errors.
    4. I learnt identifying the Modifiers ( Single word modifiers that modify verb or noun , prep phrase modifiers , Clause modifiers that start with relative pronouns such as - who , that, which e.t.c ; If a modifier modifies a noun , I check to see if it is placed close to the noun )
    5. And Finally I look for Parallelism , Idioms or other errors.
    6. This process took me long to tackle SC problems, But the Ahh-Factor is I understand the meaning of sentence crisp and clear. With practice , I picked up speed.
    7. I do always revise my notes , if I miss out lot of problems during practice as it indicates wear of my conceptual knowledge.

Use , a logical approach , Go Slow initially , achieve accuracy and practice more to pick up the speed. Its like when you learn to drive your car, you tend to be slow and safe. but once you have more control, you pace up with confidence ;) Same-thing goes for SC. No shortcuts' here !

An Example of breaking of a sentence into clauses is illustrated below :

Stymieing the Armada’s plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma’s army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as “fireships,” vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet.

Phrase - " Stymieing the Armada’s plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma’s army off the coast of Flanders in the Spanish Netherlands " --- No Verb Here , So just a phrase !

Clause 1 - " the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only due to gale winds that favored the British " Subject is " The reason for defeat of the Spanish Armada " - A noun Phrase , Verb is " favored ", Hence this is a clause.

Clause 2 - " but also the sacrificing of eight war ships as “fireships,” vessels filled with pitch, brimstone, gunpowder, and tar and sent downwind toward the closely-anchored Spanish fleet. " Subject is " the sacrificing of eight war ships " - A noun Phrase , and has two verbs " Filled and Sent ( both in simple past so parallelism achieved ) "

I apologize for any mistakes while breaking the sentence . Experts please correct those errors , if any exist :)

Hi all,

G Day is November 3rd, only 2 days left to go for me and I am so nervous! :yikes :yikes :yikes

Quant has been a huge struggle for me. I'm coming from an Arts background and though I did well at math in school, it's been quite a while so it felt like I was relearning everything. Did the entire MGMAT series, Official Guide, and m1-m15 of the gmat club tests. Though the explanations in the gmat club tests are often lacking for my tastes, I have found those to be the most valuable for me in terms of just drilling. If you've purchased MGMAT and have access to their website, the flashcards are also a great tool for hammering in those "tricky" concepts the GMAT is testing you on.

Haven't done much in terms of Verbal prep. I am pretty confident in all areas, and score in the 90th percentile for Verbal on each practice test, with an average of 10 minutes left on the clock when I'm done. I am a little weary of the fact that they have recently done away with most SC and now there are extra RCs, just timing wise, since it's the SCs that take the least amount of time per question.

For AWA, I am using the awesome guide on here from ChineseBurned: how-to-get-6-0-awa-my-guide-64327.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The most recent results are:

MGMAT CAT #5 (3 days ago) 710
GMAT Prep Test 2 (today) 690

I'm shooting for 700+ but 680/690 wouldn't kill me either. I will report back on Thursday with results.

Best of luck to everyone!
