I have a friend that works at my company who has spent around 6000$+ on her consultant.
Lol, did it work for her? I know people who similarly dropped thousands on consultants. Usually falls into two categories -- people with weak backgrounds, and many times not really the means to spend such money, who see a MBA as their lotto ticket and perfectionists overkilling the process, many times already coming from affluent backgrounds. It usually doesn't work for the former and the latter candidates probably would have been just as successful without a MBA.

The having a "friend" draw your entire life story on camera would raise a red flag for me as well.

As for hiring an admissions consultant for essay "editing", you're still supposed to fully write your own essays. That's why the Adcom can bring up your AWA from your GMAT to see if there is a strong disconnect in writing style if they suspect foul play. And that's also probably why Stern requires all applicants to actually send their GMAT score instead of the self-report.

On another note, my YouTube video created on iMovie and filmed using my MacBook Pro has finally been viewed yesterday...

Yea She got into several schools, so it worked out for her. Reason it was so much was she used a full consultant package for all her schools. She had a strong profile so I think she would have gotten in without them.

I relied on bugging almost every friend/family member I have. Worked out ok for me and it was a lot cheaper. ( I gave thank you gifts). I see the value in consultants particularly when you are starting the essay revision process, but I also think it gives the people that can afford it a small advantage.

am i missing something here? i thought the entire application needs to be your own work - including essay 3. it's obvious that this guy had another person draw the entire life story for him (as seen at the end and by the fact that the applicant doesnt seem to have tattoos). he probably also hired a video editor but that's debatable since he might be a video editing guru.

Exactly. I learned Final Cut for this sole purpose, and I'm glad I gained that skill, but it's not even close to the same ballpark. He may or may not have had professional help (my money is on yes). However he clearly didn't do the artwork, which is central to the video.

I don't blame the guy for going all out, and he seems like a cool guy I would like to be in a class with. As mentioned, essay 3 alone likely won't make a weak application, but what I worry about is if something like this would tip the balance between candidates on the bubble (e.g., the seemingly large group of WL'ers).

The uploader (whose name is different from the applicant's) has uploaded a couple of other videos doing the same drawing thing for businesses, so it seems that he had a substantial hand in making the video. Maybe coming up with the idea, too. That's why I am curious to see how this candidate did and how much weight the admissions committee gave the video.

i hope the guy had enough sense to submit the video under his own user name and not the user name of the guy whose business he used to make this video. because it seems like even the idea is not his own.

You're right: https://www.youtube.com/user/AlanWurman

At first I was like, "Well, you gotta at least give the guy some credit for coming up with the idea marketing himself."

But now, it seems like he was just using another artist's standard service. I guess if I were looking for excuses to love this candidate as an adcom, I would say: "Oh at least it shows that he has excellent outsourcing skills that applies to the business world." :)

Just to say that I got an email from Stern today inviting for interview. I submitted on the R2 deadline and am international (Europe). I'll update the thing if I can figure out how.

With that little matter out of the way, back to the video...
I thought it was okay, it looked nice but was too long, the audio was horrible and the story was a little bland. I've been told by reliable sources that making short videos is all about 1. having a compelling, succinct story/hook and 2. using a good microphone. Apparently we have a much lower tolerance of poor sound than poor visuals, and the way I felt when watching that backs up that view. Make it sound nice, make it completely your own work and come up with a genuinely original idea and I'll be much more impressed. Like others here I downloaded some video editing software (Coral something or other) and took a crash course in video-editing using my own photos/videos and some music for accompaniment (the thought of making people listen to my voice for 3 minutes on low quality video is disturbing to me). To me that's more authentic, more original and if done well also more enjoyable to watch. Big 'if' though.

p.s. if you don't know why I think the idea's a little derivative then Google 'RSA animated lectures' and watch away. In fact, Google them anyway, they're great!

Had my interview at Stern earlier today. Interviewed with a female AdCom, super nice. She asked the basic question... "why MBA, why now, why Stern", also asked some questions about professional growth and maturity. I have traveled a lot around the world and we spent a few minutes talking about my experiences. She asked about my leadership traits and also about my areas of improvement. I really enjoyed Stern, had a great lunch with a student yesterday, a fun campus tour and a great lunch today with some fellow MBA1 mexicans. Applied 1/15 interview invite 2/9.

for all those moving to new york, especially with dogs - don't write off brooklyn! i know that everyone here has been talking mostly about manhattan, and manhattan is great, but brooklyn can be a fantastic choice for a lot of reasons. someone else on this forum mentioned that it would take 45 min to get from bk to school, but i can tell you it takes me about 30-35 min and i don't even live in one of the closest bk neighborhoods to manhattan (the closest would probably have you there in 15-20). i know people on the upper east and upper west sides who go to stern and have longer commutes.

brooklyn is generally a little bit cheaper (not always), but the big thing is you usually get a lot more space for your $$, which is great, especially if you have a dog. i actually have a real kitchen and a backyard, which i'd never get in manhattan at this price. ditto on my bedroom and living space. also, we have great restaurants and bars and all kinds of fun stuff. it's generally more residential in feeling -- less packed sidewalks and tall buildings. i like the craziness of the village but it is nice to come home to something a bit more calm and still very urban.

if you want to check it out, i'd look at: cobble hill, carroll gardens, brooklyn heights, williamsburg, park slope, fort greene, and clinton hill. lots of young professionals living there, you can find good access to subways in each of those places to get to stern, and they are some fun neighborhoods.

i just know it's a beast when you are first moving here to figure out where to look, so wanted to throw it onto people's radars!

Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg....these are all places that are nearly as expensive as Manhattan. However I would much rather live in Brooklyn if the commute is really as short as you say it is. It all depends on how far away you are from the subway, and which line it is etc.

For those of you discussing admissions consultants, I used one and had a great experience. My adviser helped me in coming up with ideas about my application in general, revised essays as well as set up mock interviews with alums of the school. Most people only go through the MBA application process once and everything is fairly new to them. It definitely helped to have someone there who had seen many peope go through the same process and had seen what worked and didn't work. Sure it was a fair amount of money, but when compared to what the next two years will cost, it was almost negligible. Since I got into one of my favorite schools (Stern) and got offered a scholarship in excess of my consulting costs, I would have to say that it was well worth it, especially when considering I wasn't sure I'd be accepted to Stern in the first place. That's just my experience though. I have seen some horror stories on these message boards, but I am glad to report that my investment paid off. PM me if you have any questions about my experience.

Wait till next year. If you are getting rejections, it is unlikely you will successfully address those issues in your app in 15 days. As much as it hurts, you will benefit a lot from a few months thinking and going next cycle.

Tough luck! But Better than a ding.. so remain +ve.

Interesting that even WL notices are sent out in a 'rolling' manner! I was under the impression that Dings n WL notifications would go out end of March!

Oh Stern Adcom how do you review apps!
