danred opined that there is nothing wrong with criticizing others in the name of honesty. I disagree, it's emotional abuse. Besides, lot of emotional energy gets spent on dealing with criticism instead of achieving efficiency.
Optimism is very powerful, I can say this with my own experiences.
What I'm trying to say is - maybe we were too quick to judge the international candidate. Think about what contributed to it. Is it personality or just cultural difference?
In the countries I grew up in, I've heard of people criticizing Americans for being insincere: ex. saying "great! idea, but..." only to follow up with criticism, asking "how are you?" when they don't really care. This is obviously just a misunderstanding.
Yes, I'm all about optimism and constructive criticism. But keep in mind, those positive qualities might not be as effective or even backfire in some countries because cultures can be very different. This is based on my experience growing up in 3 different countries (Eastern, Western).
On the other hand, I'm not ruling out the possibility that Mr. school basher was just being a jerk.
