Essay 3: The entrepreneurial mindset is an integral component of the Columbia Business School MBA. Please discuss a time in your own life when you have identified and captured an opportunity

I am finding this difficult to answer...

Quote:
Identified and captured an opportunity !!

whats ur advice folks......for someone who never had a entrepreneurial stint before

How about simply a new approach to an old problem? Or a business need you addressed in a different way? Did you change a process to make it better? I don't even think your answer needs to be connected to your work. How about in your community? Did you help someone, or a group of people, accomplish something? I think "captured an opportunity" is misleading. This is essentially a leadership question, in my book...

I second that uphill. I got this one horribly wrong as I interpreted it to be something about pure entrepreneurship. I got dinged.

bsd - I'm so sorry. That stinks. Did you apply ED? And by the way, I am just guessing at the interpretation of the question - that's simply how I'm going to approach it...

In my view, Entrepreneurship is also leading an effort. So, I think you didn't get it wrong.

any new interview invites or acceptances?

I suspected Columbia to be more of a "commuter" school than NYU because of its location near Harlem.

Good luck everyone!

I submitted just before the Early Decision deadline (Oct. 10th). Haven't heard anything yet.

certainly if you are coming from downtown/the financial district, then definitely columbia is a commute but i think it all depends where in the city you will be coming from. for example, i live about 20 minutes (maybe 6 to 8 stops on the train) from columbia and the train for it is right down my block - without crossing any streets. for me, that's convenient ;]

Hey Kryzak - I actually live in Harlem, two blocks over from the main Columbia campus, and I have to tell you, the area is really quite nice. There are sections in east Harlem that are still pretty rough, but west Harlem rocks! The immediate area is largely peopled by Africans - mostly Senegalese - who own all of the restaurants (great food!) and shops in the area. I managed to find an affordable apartment there because as an artist, I qualified for moderate income housing. There are condos and converted brownstone apts. down my block going for $1-2MM apiece! The neighborhood folks are hardworking, family-oriented people - it's a pretty friendly place, even for a little white chick like me. So for all of you who might be looking askance at Columbia because you have concerns about the area...seriously, let that go. I love living "uptown".

^ co-sign. Ever since Clinton moved his office up to Harlem (2001 I believe), the place has been on an up-hill climb ;] The amount of gentrification that has occurred in Harlem alone, in terms of the sheer number, outweighs anything else that has gone on elsewhere in the city, including other places in mahattan, queens, etc.

I have seen a lot of people talking about this question. To me entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business, creating jobs, inducing competitiveness/growth, but most importantly it also nurtures a mindset that can be a vehicle for personal development and social improvement. Think out of the box!

DINGED !
Submitted: 10/5
Notice for Interview: 10/23
Interviewed: 11/5
Interviewer submitted the review on 11/12, called me up later, asked some more questions. The interviewer did give me some positive feedback after the interview.
Dinged: 11/21
My Profile: 720/Indian/27/3 years WE/Good EC at work/decent community involvement/ ..

Will post this on the results thread as well.

Atleast I'll spend the thanksgiving working diligently on R2 now....its just ironic that I spent months on CBS, and they don't even tell you where you screwed up ...was it that the second reviewer did not like my essays, or was it my interview ..or may be everything contributed a bit ...

Amazing how one moment steals away months of hard work ..
