Campus recruitment experience for folks with less than average work ex

Hi,
I've recently been trying to decide if I should apply to bschools with 3 years of work ex or 4 years of work ex (at matriculation).
From all the people I've spoken to, It seems like if one's profile is good enough, the T15 with are doable with 3 years of good quality work ex.
But recently, I ended up speaking to a student at Tuck who also got in with 3 years of work ex. While she agreed that it's reasonable to apply at 3 years, she said she felt like she was at a significant disadvantage as far as on campus recruitment is concerned, especially for consulting firms. She said she felt that she was being rejected outright ( especially by MBB) and that there seems to be a presumed but never explicitly stated preference for 4+ years of work ex, though not across all industries (Finance and technology firms didn't mind it much ).
I happen to be aiming for consulting too and was hoping to get inputs from students who are currently in business school. Assuming same 'quality' of work ex, do people with fewer years have a harder time getting into consulting compared to people with 4-5+ years of work ex?
I have some personal reasons which make it ideal for me to start my MBA as soon as possible. I'd rather not wait another year unless it significantly helps my chances as far as post-mba jobs are concerned. For this discussion, I'm not concerned with chances of bschools admits, only post bschool jobs with regards to years of prior work ex. Looking forward to your inputs!
Thanks,
PS: I'll be a international student, if that's relevant.
