I did my graduation in Civil from a decent government college(Non-IIT) in 2012 from India(70.2%).I realized that I was not so interested in Civil & opted to work as a Research Analyst at a Local Market Research Start up firm.
My initial projects were related to my civil background(Some town planning and Slum Rehabilitation studies) but I slowly transitioned to the core Product Research,Market studies/Consulting etc in the next & a half.
To build the relevant profile & get an admit in a good US B -school was the main idea behind this switch in field.I then inquired with a consultant on my chances for Ross 15/16 with a GMAT score of 750 & the above profile.To my shock,He said I should rather work for a civil firm for a year or two more..relate my current 2 years of MR experience with civil projects and then go for an MBA or rather go for MS and then an MBA
His reasoning's were partially based on the fact that
1.US B schools pay a great weight-age to you graduation field & such an abrupt change from the same is taken in a negative sense.
2.Market Research exp in India will not provide a good platform for working on consulting assignments in US and thus I might have issues with post MBA employments
3.Very less civil guys opt for an MBA & my profile will thus stand-out among the IT people.
If this is true,I have wasted 2 precious years based on my wrong presumptions and have to start again in my core field.That I am willing to do if some expert vouches for the above facts because I do not wish to face the same situation again 2 years down the line.
To add to the above facts:
Volunteering Exp-Yes.
Extra Activities: None to mention about

Hi,
I am a BSc(IT) Graduate and am planning to pursue MBA as my further education.
As I thought of this a little bit late, so the 2014 batch has already started, and the colleges i intended to join have no more empty seats and I have to apply for the 2015-16 batch, these colleges being the top colleges for MBA in Mumbai.
Now there is this other college which has recently founded in 2012, approached me to join them. This college is Athena College of Management. They promise me 10 paid-internships in the first year, a paid 4 month international internship in the second year, will be teaching me french language, and promise a placement with a minimum annual package of 6 lakhs per year.
They also start their academic year this year itself, i.e, 2014-15, hence I am not losing that one year which I will if I wait to join the other top colleges.
Though all these features are alluring, I still feel insecure joining this college, as it is not a renowned college. They say that they are well known in the corporate sector and promise a good job by the end of the two years.
I still feel insecure as in I am not sure I should risk my two years with the uncertainty that they really can provide me the job and talents they promise.
What do you suggest I should do?
Should I wait and go for the top colleges like N.M and bajaj, etc,
Or should I believe them and join Athena college?
Please please do help me in this.

I’m afraid that you’ve fallen into a bit of a trap – attempting to shape your professional path around future b-school plans, rather than pursuing what is meaningful to you and then making a compelling case for b-school based on it. I disagree with the other person, because it really and truly is not that formulaic. It is not that calculated. There is no way you can build a compelling, vibrant, committed, passionate application based on such calculations.
In fact, I believe that either path would be viable – as long as all the other factors qualified you highly and your work (in whichever area) was outstanding in terms of leadership, impact, and accomplishment.
I suggest pursuing the work path that is most meaningful for you as a prelude to management consulting, creating a stellar professional track record in that role, and then preparing applications with conviction that you have a great deal to offer.
