Hey everyone,

I'm feeling a bit confused and overwhelmed. Can you help me out?

I have a few questions about school selection. Really confused!

1) What factors should I consider when choosing a school?
2) What are the most important things to think about when selecting a school?
3) Is it a waste of time and money to attend a school that's not in the top 25, especially for international students?

@Dhruv_Jaiswal - Check out my detailed write-up here covering 10 key factors to consider when choosing your target schools. This is a key step, as it directly impacts your outcome.

The top-25 are certainly safe bets for international students, but prioritizing even within those is crucial to ensure your personal and professional goals (which are unique to you) are met.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Arvind

Thanks for the reply. I had another question, I have noticed that many emphasize on school visits. How important is a school visit ? It can cost a lot for internationals like me .. so is there a way to get in touch with students and alums while not having to travel to US or does school visits have a much greater impact compared to the costs?
Good question. Campus visits are a great opportunity for due-diligence and establishing a rapport with AdCom/ students, if you can logistically and financially afford it. Having said that, meeting AdComs in info-sessions or events is a great alternative. Another option is to interview in-person (if/ once you're shortlisted), where you can arrange a campus visit as well.

If you choose to work with us, we'll be able to put you in touch with alumni mentors from US Top-15 MBA programs on hourly sessions, where you can gather insights specific to each school. This is advisable if you're unable to visit schools and/ or connect with alums by yourself.

Arvind

Hi Dhruv,

Factors for selecting b-school:
1. academics - what style of teaching does a b-school have/ flexibility in curriculum, what are the specializations on offer, do they give STEM certification (important for an international applicant applying to the US). How is the project work and internship component of the curriculum?
2. other opportunities outside academics - which are the professional and social clubs of your interests, how active are they? are there any international travel opportunities (b-school students can go on many international trips which can be academic/ employment related or fun)
3. Employment- read through B-school employment reports to know which industries/ functions/ regions students go to post MBA or for internship. From the reports, you will also get an idea about post MBA and internship salaries. To learn more about employment from an international student's perspective, reach out to current students and ask about their experience.
4. class profile- check this to get a sense of where you stand as compared to others.
5.   LinkedIn search - build a network of current students and recent graduates from your target b-school and ask them about their experience of b-school
6. program cost and total cost of attending

These, IMHO, are the most important factors for selecting b-school.  all the research you do will lead you to the 7th factor-
7. Fit - do you see yourself fitting in the b-school culture? did you have good discussions with b-schools students? what idea did you form about the b-school community? do you feel excited about attending that b-school?
Read these articles that explain it better:
https://mbadecoder.com/factors-selectin ... s-schools/
https://mbadecoder.com/five-ways-to-net ... admission/

Going to b-school on a visit - if you have the money and time, then maybe. Otherwise there are other ways to research:
1. online events hosted by b-schools.
2. student and alumni connects
3. school ambassador connects
4. Approach Club members/ leaders to learn about clubs
5. visit the b-school tours in your country
A b-school visit will not win you brownie points for admission, it will just enable you to see the b-school, conduct your research. While that is supremely helpful, its also very expensive to travel and pay for overhead charges. Also, often times the visiting dates are very close to application deadlines, in which case, you can land up compromising your applications ( I have experienced that with applicants who decided to travel in the month of their deadlines).
read this article for more indepth info: https://mbadecoder.com/five-ways-to-net ... admission/

"Is it a waste of time and money to attend a school that's not in the top 25, especially for international students?" - the answer to this question will vary from applicant to applicant, so it will be difficult to advice without knowing more about your profile/ caliber and where you will stand in the admissions process. Also, every applicant has a different expectation from their MBA experience, so it would be better to think of this answer with your needs and expectations in mind.

Hi Dhruv,

Here's the short version:

1. Things to keep in mind:

a. Suitability for your career goals, if applicable. Top schools are good for everything.
b. Brand value of the school - to the extent possible.  Your profile andscores will  determine how high you can reach, so keep expectations reasonable, but ambitious.
c. Geography - if there's a particular geography that is appealing to you.
d. Costs.

2. Most important things to think of - variations of the pointes stated above.

3. Not necessarily.  If you get a great scholarship, and end up paying very little out of pocket, of if you are the heir to a family business and are just looking for an international degree, or if you are very clear about how the degree will help with your futre.

About your other question on the thread - school visits are not necessary or expected of international students.  However, if possible you can attend online events, and events organized by the school in your vicinity.

Best,
Karthik
