Just a few words about my background:

I have worked for 3 years in IT industry as a Business Analyst in Fortune 200 company, 8 months in an educational sector and 1 years in the Non-profit sector's Clean India Mission. Now, I am targeting Public and Non-Profit MBA of Questrom School of Business. My post-MBA goal is to enter the educational reform sector of big consulting firms such as the Mckinsey where I can use digital innovation learned from the MSDI curriculum to transform school systems and revolutionize teaching both inside and outside the classroom.

Do my goals seem realistic?

I thinking picking Mckinsey for the sector and school you mentioned is going to be a stretch. Do MBB recruit there?

Also, does MBB focus a lot on education reform? You might want to check out more niche firms and those that recruit at this school.

Since this is not a school selection forum, I'll refrain from going there - but definitely more digging is needed.

Hmm interesting.

I have undergrad in Computer Science , Major in Data science and minor in Human Computer Interface (I should work on my final report and get the undergrad degree out of the way by end of june. grrr )
Worked as Technical/Data Analyst for Western Canada's biggest Accounts receivable firm for over 2 years. Currently working at Canada's third biggest CPG firm in (processed foods domain - think meat products) as Business Intelligence Analyst for almost 3 years. Got one promotion in my second job but job responsibilities have increased many fold ranging from Business Analyst to BI analyst to Hardcore Developer. In a nutshell though i analyze data and provide solutions for living. Where others see problems, i see opportunities. I fix processes not people.

Post MBA goal - MC is for sure but i want to take a crack at Investment Banking hopefully during Summer internship. Long term C suite executive or name partner.

Rationale - I work alongside Consultants from PWC , Deloitte all the time. I have the business know how but also the technical skill set required. Only thing missing is that Consultant tag and big fat pay cheques. Can i do it without an MBA ? For sure if i tap into my network, but it'll still be Tier 2 firm in Canada and i want to travel at somebody else's expense lol

Thanks bb10 for the input.
Though Mckinsey focuses a lot on education reform, it does not recruit there. As suggested, I can take up some niche firms as my short term goals and my long term goal could be an educational reform head.

vivek6199 i back up bb10 on this. Even if you do get into a higher ranked school, getting into MBB will be a stretch there as well as you would compete with former MBBs and other consulting folks. If you want to work in education reform, have you considered companies such as Education Pioneers, Teach For America or other Ed-Tech start ups? The catch would be get H1B status but I don't think adcoms will care about that in the application stage. Boston has a great public school network. You can try looking up people on LinkedIN who have made a similar career switch and ask them for help!

Yes it is tricky but i met somebody at Foster who got into Mckinsey and he explained it quite beautifully. He said for consulting your prep should start the moment you get admit call from your school.
You need to start thinking like a consultant and practice case studies, well for starters read quite a few books on it atleast. Once you have that development office/recruiting office can atleast get you in touch or an interview with MBB. So it is tough but not impossible even at lower ranked B-school. I have case studies and reports from McKinsey that i can give to you if you want. Read up on it and prepare as much as you can.

THE MBB CONUNDRUM

Look, MBB recruits at only that top 15 on campus (more or less). We can all give exceptions (I have a buddy at A&M who recruited off campus) - but that isn't the point.

The point is likelihood of you getting in to the B-school of your choice pitching MBB, given your background.

That's what this thread is about.

Consulting is about three things:
1) thinking on your feet (presenting to execs, being grilled by people during Q&A, etc),
2) being diligent about research, and
3) being effective in project teams

Have you done this in your life? Most probably. But guess what, everyone else has too.

Stay away from pitching consulting UNLESS you're coming from that sector.

Or identify niche companies that are easier to get into - but don't dilute your ambition.

vivek6199 - I think souvik's advice is spot on.
