Need help w/ question 3. Thanks in advance

MartyMurray can you help?
Marty actually reached out to me and I shared the screenshot of the question from the test and he agreed that it's a busted question. Anyone have an idea how to report a question on mba.com?

Swagatalaxmi Yes, I completely agree that it's busted, which is quite frustrating!

You could try contacting GMAC, but so far they haven't been very responsive about this kind of feedback.

This is an unusual question. If you score high, it is common to run into unusual questions that require an unusual approach. However, people get stumped by these unusual questions and so they start coming up with excuses but as you can see this included GMAT prep so this question is OK for the GMAT, Despite with a few people may say.

In terms of question three, just have to judge it if it fits the requirements. I didn’t feel any of the sentences were fitting the requirements. Since this number three was not what I would imagine to be a career statement and was debatable. I don’t think it’s clear yes to me. Sentence 4 seemed to be all clear yes. so I am kind of stuck too but that still does not mean this is not a valid GMAT question. It’s just a strange one.

The questions are fine and you do get such situational contexts. As for the answers, that is a different matter. All I can say is that I would have chosen all No's for question 3.
The live active questions would not be debatable so don't worry.

Question 1:

For each of the three lettered requirements in the Instructions tab, select Yes if Sentence 2 of Dawit's draft of his personal statement clearly helps the draft satisfy that requirement. Otherwise, select No.

Solution:

Sentence 2 of the Draft: I am conscientious, organized, and highly motivated.

Requirement A: A description of your career goals
There are no career goals mentioned in Sentence 2.
NO

Requirement B: An explanation of why you are interested in this job
There is no explanation given in Sentence 2 regarding the interest related to the job.
NO

Requirement C: A description of any personal qualities or experiences that make you a desirable candidate
There are personal qualities given in the Sentence 2 that definitely make Dawit a desirable candidate.
YES

Question 2:

Based on their comments, Dawit's three friends all recommend that which one of the following sentences from the rough draft be revised or deleted?

Solution:

For sentence 1, all the friends give mixed reviews such as OK, delete and revise.
For sentence 2, all the friends give mixed reviews like revise and keep it unchanged.
For sentence 3, all the friends give mixed reviews like revise, OK, delete.
For sentence 4, however, all the three friends say that the sentence needs to be revised.
For sentence 5, all the friends give mixed reviews like OK, good and revise.

So, it is evident that the answer is Sentence 4, as all the three friends suggest the same.

Sentence 4

Question 3:

For each of the following sentences in the rough draft, select Yes if the sentence clearly helps the draft satisfy Requirement A in the Instructions tab. Otherwise, select No.

Solution:

Requirement A: A description of your career goals

Given that,

Sentence 1: My ten years of experience in administrative services make me well suited for this job.
This sentence does not specify any kind of career goals, it mentions about the past experiences and not the goals.
NO

Sentence 2: I am conscientious, organized, and highly motivated.
This sentence does not specify any kind of career goals, it mentions about the qualities of Dawit.
NO

Sentence 3: The ability to work with managers to improve efficiency is highly important, and I have demonstrated this skill throughout my work life.
This sentence specifies the career goals that Dawit feels is important to him and provides evidence for it using his past experience.

This is all over the place on here. best to right this one off as pompous academia/ gotcha tricks and move on.
Blackcrow1972
It is very easy to know the answer and then make a story around it to "show off" your skills as a tutor. Clearly Q3 is incorrect.

Sentence 3: "The ability to work with managers to improve efficiency is highly important, and I have demonstrated this skill throughout my work life."

This sentence provides information about Dawit's skills and experience but does not address the required task of describing career goals. Instead, it focuses on past achievements and qualifications, not future aspirations.

Answer: No, it does not explain Dawit's career goals.

Sentence 3:
Quote:
"The ability to work with managers to improve efficiency is highly important, and I have demonstrated this skill throughout my work life."

Why GMAT might say "Yes":
  • While the second half ("I have demonstrated this skill...") refers to past experience,
  • The first half ("The ability to work with managers to improve efficiency is highly important") implies a forward-looking priority — i.e., a value or direction Dawit wants to continue pursuing in his future work.
In GMAT terms, this indirectly reflects a career goal, to continue focusing on improving efficiency in collaboration with managers.
This is not an explicit statement like “My goal is to become an operations manager focused on efficiency improvement,” but GMAT often allows implicit goal statements, especially when the context suggests a forward-looking orientation.
