After 4 years of experience as a doctor in government, private and nonprofit sectors, I’m looking forward to upgrading myself. In the short term, I want to gather management tools and work with other inspiring leaders possibly as an associate/manager, which will eventually help me bring healthcare equity in society.

Good luck with the GMAT!
A medical doctor is a very challenging and respected position in the US. I think you can find options in Healthcare consulting in the immediate timeframe, Fuqua and UNC offer good opportunities for people looking to get into Healthcare consulting - even if you don't have your heart on it, AdCom will love you if you write about it.

I believe you are aware that you qualify as a diversity candidate. However, to distinguish yourself within the diversity applicant pool and secure a spot in top-tier programs, it is essential to conduct thorough research and comprehend the unique offerings and pathways to your goals at each school you apply to.

If your aspirations involve healthcare-related objectives and you are considering top B-schools, schools like Tuck and Duke MBAs may be fitting choices due to their affiliations with medical schools. Both institutions have robust pharma/healthcare specializations and are renowned for their consulting prowess.

For a career in management consulting, you could present your short-term plan as targeting generalist consulting roles within the healthcare sector, eventually transitioning into a specialized track (e.g., marketing or research) after a few years, as many consulting firms offer this flexibility. In the mid to long term, you could explore leadership positions. Your ability to articulate your interest in a specific healthcare field will be pivotal in making your candidacy distinct.

I gained two years of full-time work experience right at the end of my undergraduate studies, which I spent contributing to our family's advertising company. One of my notable achievements during this time was successfully planning, procuring, and installing LED screens throughout the capital city in my state. This project marked a pioneering effort as it was the first instance of such technology being used for advertising in India.

Additionally, I concurrently worked with our sister company, an electrical contracting firm. Among my significant responsibilities was managing a major government project in Andhra Pradesh, where I oversaw the installation and erection of 260,000 street lights across five economic clusters. This involved close collaboration with government agencies, fellow contractors, and the supervision of a team of 70 employees and workers.

While pursuing my postgraduate studies, I continued to work on and manage various projects, gradually assuming more significant responsibilities within our family businesses.

Hi. I would also recommend looking into Columbia and Kellogg - both have a Family business track, which makes it much easier for someone with Family Business background and having family writing LOR's

P.S. Crazy GMAT score by the way! Really really good!
PPS. For the sake of MBA, you would have 3 years of Work Experience since most would be considering it at the time of matriculation or around July 1 timeframe.

Based in Shanghai, China, have been working in luxury / fashion industry for almost 10 years, solid marketing / brand management skills and led a team of over 10 people in my previous job. Joined Sequoia China 6 months ago to support a newly invested start-up fashion brand. Marketing is super cool, but I want to understand the business from a completely new angle. Still trying to get a better GMAT score... but I'm swamped with work, so let's see! Short-term goal is to gain oversea experience, work as marketing director manager in an International company.

Hope to get some advice on schools, essays and etc. Let's connect! 💗

Hi lilcc,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Your overall experience is on the higher side than the class average of your target schools. We suggest considering MBAs for mid-career professionals (https://www.aringo.com/mba-over-30/) or EMBA programs. Some of these schools also take EA scores. Please check the requirements from your end too :).

A lot of details are missing like your undergrad institute, the impact of your work, promotions, international, exposure, extracurriculars, etc. in the given information, so if you send me your CV and other info on [email protected], I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some fantastic apps.

All the best!

Interesting to see that a person was denied at Kellogg but admitted at HBS. you could argue that maybe they knew that they would not matriculate or sensed it, but I don’t think so. If they had a really strong candidate, they would’ve admitted it. I think this shows an example where admissions can be a crapshoot… unpredictable.

@bb Totally agree. It could also because that somehow the applicants pool that specific year for HBS didn't have many people from similar background/profile but for Kellogg there were many. bb please could you help quickly scan through my profile and share your thoughts?

I think Harvard having the most applicants of any business school would not have a lack of strong candidates. I’ve heard that the strength of Harvard class is so strong that they could fill two classes if they want it and not go down and quality… I think this is more on Kellogg and than Harvard.

PS. I’ll check your profile. Sorry if I haven’t seen it

You're correct that HBS has the most applicants but not many from my country. I have scanned through the decision tracker in previous year for Vietnam applicants to HBS and found not many. There were people are (I know) would make a strong candidate for HBS but didn't apply as they thought HBS as "best in the world" and went for a little lower reputed schools (outside HSW).

HBS scholarship is need-based, which is unique compared to other programs. Basically if you get into HBS, and you make less than 65K/year, you are getting some money, and if you are an international, you are going to get quite a bit of money... if you get in ;-)

6-year Oil and Gas management professional looking to step into Portfolio Management in Renewables Energy post-MBA either in the US or Europe. First generation college student, official Red Cross volunteer, Union president at departmental-level at work, and a certified PMP, RMP, PMI-SP by PMI.

Long term would like to go back home to involve in the renewable transition of the country. Has been involved in some major renewable projects in my current jobs but expect an MBA will provide more leadership/ network/ and global perspectives.
I highly value the community contribution so want to go to schools such as HBS, Wharton, Booth, Ross.

Sorry for missing your profile 🤦‍♂️

I think you’re doing really well by connecting with other applicants and talking to the current students and learning what it takes.

A big part of the application is to show yourself as a top 5% performer in everything you do.

You don’t want to come off arrogant or anything like that but instead you use results to paint the picture. For example, someone may have volunteered for Red Cross but you’ve done more than just volunteer, perhaps you made some recommendations or suggestions or you took initiative beyond the expected. and all of your examples and essays you want to clearly exceed expectations at work, and everywhere else.

Looking at other applicants, it seems like Vietnam the ground 700 may be totally cool score. I’m not sure if you need to give any (s) these are explanations, anyone coming from India definitely would have to, because it’s just too competitive but looking at your other successful countrymen, or women, it seems the score works.

Finally I would say it’s very awesome and fantastic that you are planning to continue to work in a similar industry and that you already have taken steps to enter the renewables sector. It’s a great confirmation that you’re not just sitting on your butt and you’re taking initiative and not just waiting for business school to help you get there so I think you’re doing all the right things 👍

PS. It seems we have quite a number of folks from Vietnam playing this year. I am pleasantly surprised 😎

Thanks @bb for your thoughts. Really appreciate it.

I am considering retaking my GMAT because 1. the IR in my last attempt was terrible (was exhausted and wanted to end the test) and 2. I'm consistently scoring around 710-740 in my practice exams and my gut instinct told me I'm not going to score higher. Do you think I should give it another shot?
User avatar
10 Sep 2023, 20:42
It’s not worth retaking the test for IR. Schools do not care about IR. They really ignore that score along with the essay score. So improving your integrated reasoning will have zero impact on your chances but improving your overall score by 20 or more points would have an impact.

Nice spread of schools and great application strategy with spreading the applications between R1 and R2. I would say though applying only to HBS/Stanford is going to be a limited data point... you don't know if you are well short of the goal if you get a ding or not and HSW can be unpredictable.

Hi. You have an interesting and unique profile. My guess you probably want a higher score for Ross but Kelley and Judge nay work, though I would not expect any Aid with 650 so may be worth retaking if you think there is a chance you can do better and if you can improve by more than 30 points, def worth waiting until R2.

In terms of career, I guess you are going to recruit in CPG, staying in the same industry - that helps a lot having prior work experience, however, CPG is not a super popular track these days - few companies sponsor H1B's and the pay is not as good as Consulting or Tech or finance in the US at least. Just heads up but I think with your background it still makes sense to pursue as you will have the best shot at recruiting. It will be networking and recruiting on your own. I would recommend that you start now and reach out to students and try to connect with folks from CPG background or looking to get into this area - this will help in the long term.

@bb Thanks a lot for your recommendation!
One of the points makes me a little hesitant about my profile is the employability after graduate. Indeed the pay is not as good as Consulting/ Tech/ Finance & probably not a favorable profile that schools want. Yet I can't go away for the passion :P hehe Definitely would follow your advice to reach out folks & go networking.

I don’t think this would diminish your chances of admission. The schools want diverse group of students and they also want people who will get a job in their field. Schools want leaders in their field. It may be nonprofit or HR or consulting or tech. Schools know that not everyone will work in consulting but the lake strong people from any industry. If you are good at what you do, and you’re passionate about it, it shows in everything you do.

After 3 years in technology, I am looking for a switch into strategy and management. I want to be at a firm where I can help construct the vision, assist in market strategy, and work in mergers and acquisitions. I do not want to code 9-5, which is what I do now.

I am targeting Yale SOM, Stanford GSB, Wharton, Booth, UVA Darden, and Scheller GA Tech

My undergrad is in Systems Engineering and Economics from UVA where I received a GPA of 3.7

My biggest "story" that I can tell is about mentorship. From the time I was 12, I have done tutoring, and then in college I was an RA and also helped build an engineering after school mentorship science program for underprivileged kids. At my company, I founded an intern mentor program for 3 years and have run it. I would like to convey how I like the value and idea of mentorship and how I would improve such qualities at a business school.

Aside from that, pretty standard extracurriculars, I do some service here and there, play sports, and was in Model UN growing up.

My GMAT is a 740 but Q 46 V 46. I am an Indian male in tech, so I worry that the Q 46 is a bit low, can someone confirm or deny this for my schools of choice.

As a whole what do you think?

Hi redskinner2390,

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations.

My name is Priyanka, Client Manager at ARINGO.

Your overall GMAT score and a good GPA seem fine- Don't worry much. The focus needs to be more on your "story" and we can help you with that :). While mentoring is a good story we can discuss your profile further in depth to take out more meaty data for your applications (w.r.t. goals, etc.). The target schools are competitive and will require compelling essays.

A lot of details are missing like your current employment details, roles and responsibilities, etc. in the given information, so if you send me your CV and other info at [email protected], I would love to connect you with our CEO who will be happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some fantastic apps.

All the best!

Awesome profile. I would recommend to you another awesome Brazilian former attorney who is doing his MBA at Darden right now and who’s joining MBB next year - his goals were project management or consulting and your backgrounds seem quite a bit similar. He has been able to leverage his law degree to great extent in recruiting in the United States so this is going to be a great advantage for you as well. If you want to message him on GMAT Club, is user name is @MaliFri.

Do you have an awesome long-term goal. It’s great to have a vision that is personal and unique. I would recommend getting quite specific and granular in your short term goals. I assume you would be recruiting for some tech p.m. rules among the top companies in the US?

Hi. It is a good question. I can tell you right away that no consultant will tell you that you suck but you are in luck cause I ain't no consultant. Alright. that was a bit of a bad joke, but there was truth in it, nobody wants to kill anyone's dreams. A lot about applications is about your confidence and about how you present yourself.

I would say you picked what i would consider pretty aggressive goals but I think reachable with some help from a friend who can back you up. At the same time, I would say most except UCLA would be no-scholarship programs. If you are considering/looking for scholarships, perhaps worth going down a tier to Fuqua, Ross, Yale, Darden, Johnson, Stern.

I don't do much of profile reviews and I don't consult and I have no idea about the strength of your applications and stories but with lots of assumptions, that's my take. As. usual, it is good to apply to a spectrum of programs to get feedback in R1 and readjust for R2.

My guess you are going to be retaking the GMAT as 600 is a tough sell for some of these programs... though score is not everything and some will waive them for a strong applicant....

Consulting can be a tricky industry to break into. You have to be really focused and polished, quick thinking on your feet, and well presented, though I don't really know about the hiring patterns outside of the US. 😇

Usually in consulting you will be given a project you can start contributing to immediately. This means you learn on your own and start adding value in ways you can until you figure things out. You won't be trained in marketing, finance and operations. Nobody has time for that but you can learn from observing others. You will have to work on the project as otherwise, nobody will pick you and rather pick experienced consultants who do not require training. Most likely you would be deployed in Oil and Gas consulting projects since that's your strength. Just FYI.

Thanks Mr.bb for your suggestion.
1. I am a continuation question on the same, can't I be learning the required skills in my MBA course and be job ready, right after my studies
2. If Change of field is required, could you please suggest how shall I craft my application and even my MBA journey

That is a good question. MBA is a pretty generic degree and unfortunately it does not teach you any specific skills you will need on job. 😱

You learn very broad frameworks and ways to prioritize your time as well as manage stress and push yourself to the limits but you don’t really learn how Amazon warehouse functions for example or how Apple marketing works or how Microsoft tech PMs are expected to deliver their PPTs…
