Underrepresented ethnicity/race:

I began my career with 2 years of back-office experience and faced challenges breaking into front-office investment banking. Through persistence and hard work, I was fortunate to transition into investment banking, where I have since gained 3 years of front-office experience in M&A. Recently, I have also spent a few months working in lower middle-market private equity (LMM PE).

Post-MBA, my goal is to return to investment banking, with the longer-term objective of transitioning into private equity, focusing on a different investment strategy.

I attended a non-target undergraduate school, graduating with honors. This background contributed to the difficulty of breaking into investment banking, which took 2 years of determination. Additionally, I was an NCAA Division I athlete on a scholarship, balancing the demands of athletics and academics throughout my college career.

Congratulations on your interview invites!

I think you have a really good chances. You have strong track record from the same point of an exclusive and competitive work experience/job as well as athletic accomplishment.

Your undergraduate prestige does matter to an extent as that sort of set your trajectory though you can absolutely have a low start and then great work experience and results along the way but admissions teams tend to play it safe and like to reward continuous success so the better your undergrad, the better chances you have.

Finally, it does help being a minority from the diversity standpoint. Schools always like to build diverse classes and so the more boxes you take the better but again it all depends on the competition so it’s not like you can just walk in being a Everest candidate you need to bring quite a bit of other value.

Another plus, staying within the same industry is a big plus and the fact that you have demonstrated success here and moved around and hopefully gotten a promotion indicates that you’re in a certain path and you’re planning to continue and build on those strengths and leverage the networks you have Build a recruiting will be a lot easier for you than some for someone moving from abroad who has never done finance.

Not having a score for you is likely not a valid or a significant data point though it would help to offset a weaker undergrad but admissions will basically consider you applying with an average or so score and that hardly makes a big difference. Even if you had a high score it wouldn’t make a huge difference at these programs But potentially makes you more attractive as you add brownie points to the average GMAT core and help set some of the weaker candidates who may bring other values....

Sorry for me entering profile review and feedback, I think you have a lot of strong points. I think at this point you’re hunkering down and waiting. If you decide to reapply for any reason, we can chat more about ways of strengthen your application for next season such as engaging more with current students and alumni or adding a score but at this point I would be preparing for interview and making sure you come off personable and likable and a good team player that would impress employers and also positively impact the class

Hi, I had my interview with a 2nd-year student, and it felt like they were using a standard list of questions. Later I realized many of them were pretty similar to the ones other R1 interviewees mentioned. I’d definitely recommend checking the group chat to see if anyone has shared their questions

Hi @WaterCadet ! Your profile stands out due to its unique international experience in the shipping industry, leadership roles, and impactful extracurriculars. With a 730 GMAT score and a decent GPA of 3.3, your academic credentials are competitive for top schools. However, transitioning from a niche field like transportation to consulting requires demonstrating transferable skills, leadership, and strategic thinking in your application. Your work with the Robinhood Army and teaching underprivileged kids add depth and a strong sense of social responsibility to your profile.

For schools like HEC Paris, INSEAD, IESE, Oxford, and NUS, focus on articulating how your global exposure, operational expertise, and problem-solving abilities will add value to their programs. Additionally, clarify your motivation for switching to consulting and how your MBA goals align with the resources at these schools. To increase your chances, continue developing your French language skills (especially for HEC and INSEAD), strengthen your consulting narrative with concrete examples, and secure strong, personalized recommendation letters. Please take a look at BLOG1 and BLOG2.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to learn more about your profile and provide a detailed evaluation and gauge your chances to the best-fit schools. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

Cheers!

HI WaterCadet,

what I like about your profile is the range of ECAs- i haven't seen many ECAs in resume of applicants like you (are you in merchant navy?).
The work experience looks good and when you begin to compile your applications, you must focus upon the leadership opportunities and your achievements therein. Your target b-schools value international experience, so you must bring forth how you learnt to adapt, become culturally sensitive and excel in working in multi-dimensional teams through your experiences.
The career shift to consulting sounds reasonable, and you can also explore operations roles as an alternate career goal. Given how slow the job market has been (consulting too), it will be worthwhile to do school specific research for every target program to understand which recruiters are hiring. That information can eventually help build a stronger goals essay (Oxford asks several questions about your intended industry/ role/ geography in their application).

Updating for application status.

Submitting an updated profile now that I have a new GMAT Focus score (735).

Went to a state university and had good leadership / extra curricular involvement during undergrad and post undergrad.

I worked in investment banking after undergrad and switched to PE. I am planning on returning to PE with a specific sector in mind (have a good story for it and prior experience).

I have strong recommendation letters (M7 alumni).

I have applied to all my schools and now I am waiting to hear back on interviews.

If the plan is to return to PE post your MBA, would recommend swapping a Kellogg SOM with Columbia Business School and even having a Wharton on your radar. The IB/PE pool tends to be overrepresented at these schools and hence you will need to think of a strong application strategy to make yourself standout, a GMAT score north of 695 will do the trick from a score perspective. Do focus on other aspects of your profile outside your test score as well.

Thank you,

Wow... This is really really good. You have the most important aspects for your profile handled - work experience, hopefully some promotions or aspects that made you stand out, great GPA, etc. As long as you can get a little higher with your test scores - around average which would be about 685, i think you will be set. Honestly even having an imperfect score would be OK but the score is usually something that can be fixed within a few months, so hopefully not a stumbling block.

Having industry experience and not moving away is also super helpful

P.S. We are doing an MBA Spotlight Fair and have an opportunity to network with AdCom's if you are interested in hosting sessions and having a leadership position. Message me in the next few days if you are 😇

Wow. Oh my word! that’s an insane score and amazing job! I think this allows you to be a bit more boring and gives you room for some imperfections as well as maybe opportunity for a scholarship though M7’s are not particularly generous.... But schools like stern are.

Sorry, one more question, how many mistakes did you have to get that kind of a score? The reason I’m asking is that we had someone with just a single mistake who got a Q 80 with one wrong. so I’m trying to figure out what the heck is going on with these days.

Thank you. Only looking at those 5 schools so Stern is off the table, but even if the scholarships are minimal / none, I am still okay with that decision, given my very specific post-MBA goals and personal needs. Regarding mistakes - Quant I had 3 missed questions. I know which ones they are and they were 755+ level difficulties. Data I also had three missed questions. I don't remember which ones. Below is the score breakdown
Quant: 86/90 (92 percentile)
Verbal: 90/90 (100 percentile)
Data: 84/90 (98 percentile)

Whoever got the 1 missed question in Quant with an 80 either left it blank or it was a 205-555 level difficulty and so the test screwed them over. The GMAT is a ridiculous test and there is a significant level of luck involved to a certain extent

Thx. Did not leave it blank. It was in the middle but yeah the shorter it gets the crazier it gets it seems.

PS no worries about focusing on the M7 only. It is a good starting position.

Great profile! Congrats! It is fairly well traveled for the HSW applicants. Nothing jumps out in terms of red flags in your profile (it is spartan though)
I take it MBA is for the network/business skills. The only aspect that you want to have worked out in this type of a scenario targeting entrepreneurship is make sure you have already had a chat with startup folks so you have a very clear idea and expectations of what that is line as it will likely come up in the interview as they try to eval how committed you are to your goals. I am sure you have done a lot of soul searching and had some deep conversations about it.
Good luck!

After graduating from with an MBA, my goal is to shift careers to Venture Capital or consulting with a focus on climate impact. I shaped this goal during my work experience at Group Black, a mission-driven startup that facilitates investment in minority-owned media businesses. For nearly four years, I worked to help establish an equitable media industry and learned how purposeful businesses resonate not only within marketplaces, but within me. My experience was formative, but I aim to expand my lens beyond media to fully understand my impact potential.

You have a unique background coming from media space.

Seeing other applicants from the US with similar scores, I think you have a realistic list of schools so could’ve done that.

Congratulations on the interviews at UNC and Vanderbilt by the way 👍

PS. Your chances will imparted depend on the admissions and how they feel about your chances of getting recruited into your target job. I probably would not expect any scholarship offers but if you were looking for that, you will need to bump up your score by at least 30 or 40 points.
