I started my prep on April 19, I finished MGMAT around April 28. I took my first mock at April 20(V=21,Q=39) and May 2(V=35,Q=44) I am an Indian applicant pursuing engineering a part of overrepresented pool I am aiming for a 780 to apply at HBS, MIT sloan and Wharton. I am hoping to give the exam anywhere near july end such that I can retake the exam in case I receive a score any less than 750 on September-December. I can't get any formal training due to lock down so self study is my only jamm.

Hi Deeptanshu02,

I'd like to confirm the information from your prior 2 practice CAT/mock Scores. Were those tests the Official practice tests available from www.mba.com or were they practice tests from MGMAT? In addition, were the results you listed for those 2 tests the Percentiles OR the Scaled Scores for the Quant and Verbal sections?

Hi Deeptanshu02,

To start, the 750+ score is approximately the 98th percentile - meaning that 98% of Test Takers never score that high (regardless of how long they study or the number of times that they take the GMAT). Thankfully, NO Business School requires a score that high - so it's important to realize that the score that you "want" and the score that you "need" are not the same thing. There's no harm in making a 750+ your Goal, but you will have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections before you can consistently score at that higher level. Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

When applying to highly-competitive Schools such as Harvard, MIT and Wharton, beyond needing a strong GMAT Score, you will also need a strong OVERALL profile AND you will need to properly 'market yourself' to each individual Program that you apply to. As such, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement.

There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

I have a decent profile but due to COVID-19 outbreak there won't be much practical experience such as internships as they are cancelled for the time being,However focusing alone on the GMAT I can offer anywhere between 4-8hours a day. I observed among the 36 questions on verbal usually 12-13 belongs to Sentence correction and verbal being my weak point, I decided it pick SC. (Update I am using MGMAT 6th edition and OG 2019)

Hi Deeptanshu02,

Raising your current scores to the point that you can consistently score 750+ will likely require at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections (including all 3 major Verbal types: RC, SC and CR). Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

In addition, if you think that there might be 'weak spots' in your application (for example, you won't be able to get significant Work Experience or internships), then you really should discuss your profile with an Admissions Expert sooner rather than later. There might be moves that you can make now (in May) that will give you enough lead-time to strengthen your application. If you wait until later on (re: September), then you might not have enough time to improve the areas that need improving.

While you might be tempted to just work through lots of practice questions at this point, you actually need consistent, professional guidance, so that you can learn all of the patterns, tactics and 'secrets' of the GMAT (without having to try to figure out all of that stuff on your own). As such, you would likely find it beneficial to invest in a GMAT Course of some kind (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led). Most GMAT Companies offer some type of free materials (practice problems, Trial Accounts, videos, etc.) that you can use to 'test out' a product before you buy it. We have a variety of those resources at our site (www.empowergmat.com). I suggest that you take advantage of all of them then choose the one that best matches your personality, timeline and budget.
