FROM TopDogMBA - A Reapplicant's Tail: It won’t be long |
I am conscious of the time to submission slowing trickling away. Despite a gruelling work schedule, this week I’ve been focused on basic admissions research for my top 4 applications – reapplying to MIT Sloan and Wharton, as well as gearing up for first-time applications to INSEAD and LBS. Ironically, despite living in London for 12 of the last 15 years, I never visited LBS so this is in some way my least researched school. I am now following the Twitter activity for those four schools and have some key information below. The clock is ticking and I need to get my head in the game. Stay tuned! I plan to apply to four or five schools in round 1 (Wharton, Stanford, Sloan, Booth and one other school I’m yet to decide on). FROM TopDogMBA - A Reapplicant's Tail: Across the universe |
June has been a ridiculously busy month so far, but I have spent a lot of time refreshing my research on various schools. Basically, I keep coming to the same conclusion: (Re)apply to INSEAD, MIT Sloan and Wharton in R1. Use the momentum (and results!) from R1 to dictate R2 strategy. A) If I get an offer from Wharton, I’m done! B) If I get an offer from INSEAD or MIT Sloan, I will try HBS and Stanford again. C) If I get no offers in R1, I am leaning toward Chicago Booth, Tuck (Dartmouth) and Yale for R2. The spanner in the works is Columbia where I got dinged w/out interview last season. You simply have to apply in the Early Decision round to stand a chance, but I’m not that excited about living in New York (although I have soft spot for the Ivy League!). While I’m working on that conundrum, I thought I’d share some of the key data for my target universe of schools. All feedback welcome! School Class Size % Int’l Avg. Age Avg. WE Avg. GMAT Avg. FROM Defying Gravity - The MBA Journey: Admissions Advice from HBS Dean |
I recently stumbled across an interesting article, highlighting a revealing interview with Dee Leopold, the head of HBS admissions. The article made me realize all of the little things that the admissions committee thinks about, many of which I'd never considered. It also made me extremely thankful that I never have to go through the application process again. I also thought it was interesting that out of the 10,000 applicants who applied to HBS last year, only 10 people chose not to write the "optional" essay. And one of those people was actually accepted! So anyway, for those of you planning to apply to b-school this coming fall, the article is worth a quick read. |

I’m leading my first project since I fell ill last year. Personally I thought it would easy managing my stress as after all it had been a year since I got ill and I’ve learnt. Plus, I managed to apply to business school and pass an exam. I mean how hard can it be? My manager asked what objectives I had for the study; I have one. Stay sane (or not go nuts) during fieldwork. I’ve been finding out this is not so simple in practice. Techniques to stay sane So here are the hints and tips I’ve picked up from a friend to help me achieve my objective;

FROM TopDogMBA - A Reapplicant's Tail: When i get home |
These past few weeks have been dedicated to getting my application workflow in order and having all my research up-to-date. Progress has been OK, but I’m not setting the world alight either! When I say ‘application workflow’ I mean literally breaking down each stage of the application process (much easier having been through this before) and figuring out what I want to have done and by when to give me confidence I’m fully on track. In truth, I have a habit of wasting time getting my pens neatly lined up (figuratively speaking) before I start tackling the ‘big stuff’, like actually starting to write essays. I’ll need to keep on top of many different things at the same time to hit my targets and, ultimately, get an offer from a top business school. In order to help with this, I have engaged the services of MBA Over 30 to help me figure out my application strategy and essay approach and Admissionado on an ad-hoc basis (in the first instance, to hit up their consultant for a ‘discovery’ session). Despite my best efforts, some days it is the best I can do to crawl into bed (late!) having barely had a coherent thought about my MBA applications. During these days I try to catch up on what my fellow applicant bloggers are up to (click the drop-down menu above to see those I am current following) and – at least on a daily basis – read the myriad Twitter offerings from schools that have piqued my interest (Chicago Booth, Columbia, HBS, INSEAD, MIT Sloan, Stanford, Tuck (Dartmouth), Wharton and Yale). Having other bloggers to keep me on track (by encouragement or shame!) is definitely helpful, but I also need to remember I’m on a different track to many people. Firstly, as a re-applicant with lessons learned from my mistakes last time around. Secondly, as a seasoned i.e. mature candidate with a lot of responsibilities to take care of. Also, having been burned last season, I need to actively explore other options for my career development. However, I’m not trying to make excuses. Ultimately, success will come from my ability to make best use of the resources available to me, filling any free time with MBA related activities, and giving it 100% when I am focused on it. On that note, today I’m reaching out to the remaining contacts (current students, alums, professors etc.) who don’t know I’m (re-)applying to ask for their help. Just one day left in June – got to make it count! |
FROM Naija MBA Gal: Application Advice & June roll-call |
June has already ended! One major thing that happened this month was that I got a lot of advice from people (current students, Alumni, Colleagues, even Adcoms – from events I attended). FROM TopDogMBA - A Reapplicant's Tail: Tomorrow never knows |
Today – 30 June 2014 – has a rather bitter taste to it. Yes, it’s a Monday, but it’s also the date I was planning to resign my job and start my journey to Boston, Philadelphia, or wherever else I might have ended up had things turned out differently. Instead, I’m experiencing a sensation with which I became very familiar last season. A little bit like a rainbow (bear with me here!). In my heart I feel sunshine – due to the significant work I’ve done on my applications and to be on my way to somewhere amazing – whereas, in my head, I feel rain – due to the huge amount of work still to be done. Each milestone passed gives me fresh momentum, yet also makes me realise how long this journey will be. Each question answered gives me a new insight about myself, but also leads to ten more questions. When I first started my MBA applications, I read that a successful candidate treated the application process like their final exams. Only such focus and determination would ultimately yield the best result. That’s the spirit that is slowly taking over me. And I’m rising to the challenge! |

FROM The adventures of a (provisional) MBA student: A lull of sorts |
Time is moving on steadily, and it’s now only just over a month before I leave for Boston. Until recently time was really dragging on, but things have suddenly started to accelerate – I’ve still got lots to do packing up my life in London before I move on and there don’t seem enough days any more! Since my last post, I’ve managed to secure a Visa, a place to live in a brilliant location in Cambridge just across the water from HBS, and received a whole host of vaccinations to my now-swollen upper arms (Massachusetts State Law requirements for students are a little bit OTT…). I’m now in a position with my flights about to be booked, that all my paperwork is basically done and now just need to get on the plane. It’s just what I leave behind that would be the problem. Recently (more in a future post) I had the opportunity to meet some current HBS first years (or RC’s – Required Curriculum’s – as they’re known at HBS) and got the unofficial ‘what they don’t tell you on the internet’ guide. The advice boils down to three main areas;
