Drivers of automobiles over 30 are more likely to purchase music in digital format and are more likely to purchase it in larger amounts than are members of any other demographic group. The popular conception that young people listen to more music in digital format than adults must, therefore, be false.

The argument is flawed primarily because the author

(A) fails to distinguish between purchasing and listening
(B) does not supply information about drivers of automobiles under 30
(C) depends on popular belief rather than on documented research findings
(D) does not specify the monetary value of the digital music purchased by any demographic group
(E) discusses music in digital format only rather than music sold in any format

simplify the argument --

drivers over 30 more likely to purchase music in digital format --> popular conception that young people listen to more music in digital format is false

Note that there is a "jump/gap" in the argument. I.e. "purchasing music" is equated to "listening to music".

It is entirely possible that parents purchase music for their children (who are below 30). then a large portion of the people listening to music would still be youngsters, not people over the age of 30.

Which answer option states this? Option A

Let us take a look at other answer options --

Option B - Incorrect

actually, we can infer this from the data given -- drivers under 30 are LESS LIKELY to purchase music in digital format and LESS LIKELY to purchase it in larger amounts than people over the age of 30.

Option C - Incorrect

the author's conclusion is based on facts provided. And the author attacks a "popular belief".

Option D - Incorrect

"monetary value" is not relevant to the conclusion. We are talking about which demographic group listens to more music.

Option E - Incorrect

other formats are not really of concern to the argument -- hence, this is not a flaw
