B is out because "that of" is wrong
C is out flanked by is right and comparison is wrong, it should be as wide as
D and e using flanked with and past tense

Ignore the strike part and then read the sentence to get rid of the extra information.

Ebenalp,  nestled amongst Appenzeller mountains , is about 1644 metres in height, surrounded by  deep gorges,  the Santis peak and  flanked by a lake,  with frozen water,  as wide as  three to four kilometers.

A.  flanked by a lake, with frozen water, as wide as  - Correct 
B. flanked by a lake with  frozen water as wide as  that of - frozen water as wide as blah blah doesn't make sense 
C. flanked with a lake to a width of - loss of information (no talk of frozen water) 
D. was flanked with lake as wide as  loss of information (no talk of frozen water) 
E.  was flanked  with lake, with frozen water, as wide as - parallelism error

Hi. I’d like to try. The sentence primarily says that Ebenalp is surrounded by a gorges and a peak and is flanked by a lake, which is pretty wide. Rest of the sentence is a bunch of nonessential stuff. If you could recognise that, you’d be good to go. For example, the frozen bit of the lake is nonessential information. Furthermore, if you are wondering how to recognise the essential stuff in this sentence, then focus on the word ‘and’ and see what elements it attempts to keep in parallel.

Hi Shikhar,

since there is no AND between "...deep gorges" and " the santis peak..", won't it mean "Ebenalp is the Santis peak"?

I think if there is an "AND" it makes better sense -> Ebenalp is surrounded by deep gorges and the santis peak

‘surrounded by deep gorges, the Santis peak and flanked by a lake‘

Surrounded and flanked are in parallel. ‘And’ acts as a parallelism marker. It could be surrounded by 2 things without the need of an and in between as the list goes on, including the bodies it’s flanked by.

On a side note. Parallelism is a great tool to help eliminate answer choices. Here the only parallelism that’s accurately compares two similar nouns is A. So it’s an easy choice. Hope this is of help to you
