(D) considerable alterations to the interest rate will occur

(B) the interest rate are going to alter considerably --- interest rate is singular-- needs "IS"

(C) there are going to be considerable alterations to the interest rate----- same as A

(D) considerable alterations to the interest rate will occur--- doesnt make sense

(B) the interest rate are going to alter considerably

(C) there are going to be considerable alterations to the interest rate

(D) considerable alterations to the interest rate will occur

(E) the interest rate will change considerably

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

Subject/verb agreement can be harder to see when you're dealing with phrases like there are or there has, which introduce the subject only after the verb. In this sentence, alterations is the subject of there is but, since the subject is plural, the verb needs to be the plural are. Eliminate (A). You can eliminate (B) as well since the singular interest rate does not agree with the plural are. The other options are grammatically fine but vary with respect to expression. (C) is much wordier than the other options and, since both (C) and (D) are passive and less direct variations of (E), (E) stands as the best, clearest, and most articulate option.

Hello ppl,

Aren't C and E trying to say different things?
in C) When we say there are going to be alterations would mean that someone (could be Reserve bank) is going to change the interest rates
whereas
in E) interest will change doesn't indicate if it will be changed by someone or it will be affected by some external parameter (may be stock markets etc)

Can such questions come in real GMAT where the meaning is not so clear and meaning in original and correct might differ or subject to interpretations?

Hi shameekv1989, if that was the intent, then following construct would have suited better:

the interest rate is going to be considerably altered in the coming months.

Is use of passive voice always wrong ?

What is the exact issue with D ?

Harsh2111s I like to find something wrong with every wrong answer, but here the best we can say is that the wording of D is unnecessarily complicated and vague. It's certainly not the case that the passive voice is always wrong. Last time we checked, it was right 50% of the time, so its presence alone is not a reason to eliminate a choice. However, there should be a reason for the passive voice. Maybe the subject we want to discuss can't act directly, or we don't know the identity of the person who performed an action, or the passive voice is needed to achieve parallelism with another element of the sentence. Here, E is clear and direct. When we say "alterations will occur," it implies that someone is actively altering the rate, but we're avoiding saying who.

Hi aaba,

Another great question! First, let's fix a minor typo in your original question - the phrase at the end "in the coming months" shouldn't be underlined. This might help you find the correct answer faster!

Economic analysts predict that there is going to be considerable alterations to the interest rate in the coming months.

(D) Economic analysts predict that considerable alterations to the interest rate will occur in the coming months.

This is also INCORRECT because it uses passive voice. It's also unclear if the rate itself will go up or down - it'll just be "altered" in some way.

(E) Economic analysts predict that the interest rate will change considerably in the coming months.

This is CORRECT because it has proper subject/verb agreement, is written in active voice, and is clear that the interest rate will change.

Why do we need to know where the interest rates are going? knowing that there are going to be considerable fluctuation in the rate is enough. Both "alter" and "change" takes care of that fluctuation. IMO, the only reason one would pick E over D is because, E is less wordy or active over passive construction. which is such a blasé reasoning .
