Dear Sir/Mam,

I am in the process of applying for Said MBA 2018-2019 batch.
While going through the essay topics I was very confused as to how to approach the first essay.
Request you to provide valuable insights on the below essay topic

'Consider a statistic or trend that shocks you. Why it is important to you and how could it be changed for the better?'

Regards

Hi Abhishek,

Typically we'd put this question back to you. Consider that your unique voice and approach to a question is what can differentiate you from other applicants. My advice is to start by simply answering the question as you would outside of an essay context. What shocks you? I've seen people talk about the % of VC funding in the US that goes to women, the number of people who don't know who their president is, etc. What news article has given you some shocking tidbits recently? Then use that as a platform for demonstrating who you are and what you're passionate about (eg. why is this shocking / appalling to you and what would you do about it). Ideally, it'd be nice if this tied to your career goals and stated passions elsewhere in the app but it doesn't have to.

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the reply.
Can I recite a social problem in my society, something I am a part of and am facing it directly?
Is it necessary that the trend should be from the professional field?
Regards
Abhishek

Hi there - it's totally up to you and what's important to you (the key word here). There are no guidelines re: personal versus professional. Just consider what's most important to you and will demonstrate to the adcom who you truly are. In this forum with limited context I probably can't do a great job of guiding you beyond what I posted earlier, so apologies for being vague, but again, my advice is to be true to your own opinions / passions with this one.
