Every one is the subject and hence the verb needs to be singular-has understood. Helping us is a gerund. A possessive pronoun such as 'his' which acts as an adjective can precede a gerund but not an object pronoun such as him. B is the answer

Hi the answer choice does not make sense grammatically

Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us we would not have succeded in our program over the past six months

A. Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us

B. Everyone of us has understood that without his helping us

C. Everyone of us have understood that without his help

D. Everyone of us has understood that without him helping us

E. Every single one of us have understood that without him helping us

Everyone – Indefinite pronoun – Singular (So A and C out)
In E, ‘Every single’ needs a singular verb ‘has’ – So E out
Between option B and D, we need a possessive pronoun before a gerund
So B is the answer

2. without him helping us - why this is incorrect?

Regards,

Hello
I am happy to help

1) Without his help - This is correct and grammatical

For the second pointer, let me list all the types of pronouns

a) Subjective pronoun - I, You, We, He, She It, They
b) Objective pronoun - Me, You, Us, Him, Her, It, Us, Them
c) Possessive pronoun - Mine, Ours, Yours, His, Hers, Its, Theirs

There are many more types of pronouns but we do not require that knowledge here

As a rule of grammar, possessive form of pronoun is also used before a Gerund (+ing form)
In the question above, we have the gerund (helping)
Option B correctly places a possessive pronoun 'his' before 'helping'. Hence, this option is correct
Option D uses objective pronoun (him) before 'helping' and is therefore the incorrect option

Hope this helps
P.S - It did sound awkward to me as well when i first learned this rule as we usually use objective pronoun in spoken english

Cheers !!

Kunal112 thank you so much for the explanation. Yes, it did sound awkward. Always good to start a day with a new lesson.

Use the same auxiliary verb in the tag in the main sentences. There is no auxiliary verb in the main sentence, use do in the tag.
Use tag question confirm check information ask for agreement.
You want to come with me, don’t you?
You can swim, can’t you?
You don’t know where the boss is, do you?

GMATNinja can you please explain how D is wrong?
I think without him helping us is better than without his helping us(option B)-Although both option doesn't seem good.

B. Everyone of us has understood that without his helping us
There is a problem in the OA. We can't use everyone like this.

1. Everyone of us...
2. Every one of us...

The second is possible, but the first is not.

Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us we would not have succedeed in our program over the past six months

Simple sentence: w/o him or w/o his helping, we can't do this

A. Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us --> "everyone" is singular

B. Everyone of us has understood that without his helping us --> correct

C. Everyone of us have understood that without his help --> same as A

D. Everyone of us has understood that without him helping us -->pronoun "him" can't modify noun/gerund "helping". two nouns/pronouns(him & helping) can't be together w/o any conjunction

E. Every single one of us have understood that without him helping us--> same as A

Got this wrong. Mistake was in identification of gerund. Once you recognise that "helping" is a gerund here, it is easy to go after B due to the possessive pronoun usage rule.

Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us we would not have succeded in our program over the past six months

A. Everyone of us have understood that without him helping us
Everyone is a singular indefinite pronoun and should be followed by "has" not have.

B. Everyone of us has understood that without his helping us
The use of a gerund and a possessive pronoun may sound funny but is actually correct. It makes sense to the use of the possessive pronoun “his,” which would express whose helping the helping is.

C. Everyone of us have understood that without his help
Everyone is a singular indefinite pronoun and should be followed by "has" not have.

D. Everyone of us has understood that without him helping us
"Him" is not the object of understood. "We" is the object of "understood". What would make sense is the use of the possessive pronoun “his,” which would express whose helping the helping is.

E. Every single one of us have understood that without him helping us
Every is a singular indefinite pronoun and should be followed by "has" not have.

Thanks to everyone for explaining the answer in detail.

I have an extended doubt and might seem very basic. How can one identify or understand the presence of gerund in the sentence?
