Hey guys, I am a Computer Science undergrad, about to start working, but I am planning to start building my profile. I know I am about to get busy from here so I might as well make good use of the time left.
I am part of an NGO and have volunteered sometimes, won a hackathon in college, and my academics are just a bit average. Please let me know what could help in my case. (I'm Indian Btw)

Hello FelixAura,

Thanks for writing in.

As you start working, there are several things you can do:

-Perform at work; focus on generating impact, volunteering for tasks, and taking up leadership roles whenever possible.
-Volunteer with organizations; however, rather than having a passive role in many organizations, try and take lead in fewer organizations; again, rather than just "volunteering", focus on having an impact (and bringing out leadership, wherever possible).
-Take up professional certifications (that align with your goals).
-Join professional clubs that align with your interests and help you hone your soft skills.

Hope this helps you start off. Should you have any follow up questions, please feel free to write to us.

All the best!

FelixAura, Getting into a top MBA program is no small feat and requires a well-thought-out approach. Admissions committees are looking for a balance of academic strength, professional experience, leadership potential, and personal qualities. Strong grades, solid GMAT/GRE scores, and certifications like CPA or CFA can show you’re ready for the academic challenges. They also want to see how you’ve grown in your career, whether through leadership roles, promotions, or global exposure. Most programs expect at least two years of work experience. But it’s not just about what you do at work; how you lead, both in and outside of the office, matters too. Finally, who you are as a person your ability to communicate, work with others, adapt, and engage with different cultures—will play a big role in how they see you as a candidate.

Also, this article will certainly help you understand the MBA admissions process more clearly. By breaking down what adcoms look for, you’ll be better equipped to present yourself as a strong candidate and effectively showcase your strengths and unique experiences.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out; good luck on your MBA journey!

Keep 3 things at the heart of any initiative you take up - professional, personal or volunteering. Doing these genuinely will help your profile 'get built':

1. Authenticity - take up initiatives that align with your personal values and motivations. when the pull comes from within, you will be more inclined to work genuinely which will guide you in making a real difference.

2. Make an impact - This is connected to the point above. Just associating with an initiative would not be enough. Do "result oriented work" and leave your impact. Showing quantified achievements is necessary in the MBA application, so focus on having impact through your work

3. Hone your leadership skills - look for opportunities to hone your leadership skills. This doesn't mean "leading people" alone. Your ability to influence, persuade, work in teams, collaborate, take initiatives, achieve results, be empathetic and open minded - all go towards building your personality and honing your leadership skills.

If you do these well and across every sphere of life, you will have a solid profile by the time you are ready to apply.

And get done with the GMAT/ GRE earlier than later. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts to get your best score.
