THE PROMPTQuote:
Following years of patient anticipation, the city dwellers grew furious and repeatedly demanded that the mayor meets the promises he made during the elections, before eventually voting him out of power and never selecting him in any future elections.
• Commands and Bossy Verbs
Certain verbs require that we use the subjunctive construction. [Did you catch what I did?]
Demands, commands, suggestions, and proposals are sometimes called "bossy" verbs.
These verbs must be constructed this way:
Bossy verb + THAT + subject/noun + bare infinitive
This is an infinitive:
to meetThis is a bare infinitive (remove the word "to"):
meet(Other verbs and statements also require this construction. You can read a short article about the subjunctive construction
here.
→ The idiomatic construction above is called "command subjunctive" or "mandative subjunctive."
A few notes.
1) In U.S. English and on the GMAT,
never include the word
should in a command subjunctive construction.
(In British English, "should" may be included.)
2) Do not conjugate the verb that follows THAT.
The "bare infinitive" is used for
all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
→ The teacher insisted that I
erase the whiteboard.
→ The teacher insists that you
find the art supplies.
→ The teacher insists that Reva
gather the other students' papers.
→ The teacher insists that we
learn times tables.
→ The teacher insists that they
carry the heavy goal post.
3) The strangest-sounding unconjugated verb is
be, but use that bare infinitive just as you would any other.
→ The judge ordered that the defendant be granted thirty days to appeal.
→ The law mandated that all passengers be masked.
