1. Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?

(A) Market repositioning by a travel agency can foster growth and increase revenues.
(B) A strong business plan, while helpful, is not essential to managing business growth.
(C) Ignoring a business plan can be detrimental to the economic well-being of a business.
(D) Improperly managed small businesses can run out of cash reserves.
(E) A strong executive is necessary for business success.

Correct Answer - B
Explanation - as mentioned in the passage: "While a strong business plan can help a business (15) grow, a good plan does not ensure growth." and "Evidence from a number of business case studies suggests that a more (20) important factor in managing growth is the presence of an executive with a clear vision of the business and its market position."
implies that the main idea of the passage is that while strong business is helpful, its not an important factor for success of a business, and more that a good business plan, whats more important is the presence of visionary and strong executive to run the business.
So w.r.t the main idea of the passage, options A,C,D can be easily eliminated as they dont qualify to be the main idea of the passage. Between B & E, E seems a little vague as the definition of strong executive is not clear from the statement.

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements about business growth is likely to be true?

(A) The size of the business can affect the importance of growth management.
(B) Experts agree on the importance of a strong business plan to business growth.
(C) A leader with strong business vision will make a business succeed.
(D) Improper management of business growth will kill the business.
(E) Regional travel agencies provide a model for general business growth.

Correct Answer - D
Explanation - as mentioned in the passage: "An improperly managed small business usually does (5) not have the necessary cash reserves to overcome mismanagement, and if growth is neither sustained nor managed properly, the existence of the business can be jeopardized.", D is the closest option to which we can agree with, as business plan or not, strong executive or not, an improperly managed business can definitely harm the bussiness.
Option A - incorrect, as the comparison to large business has not been made, so irrelevant to whats asked.
Option B - incorrect, even though close and true w.r.t the passage, it is not always the case, as strong plan doesn't guarantee growth.
Option C - incorrect, again true, but "will" makes a strong case, and this might now always be the case.
Option E - incorrect, as only one regional travel agency has been taken for the example, we cannot say the same for all the regional travel agencies.

3. Which of the following best describes the way the last paragraph functions in the context of the passage?

(A) An example is presented to undermine the assertion that a leader with vision can succeed without a business plan.
(B) The elements of a company’s success are outlined to prove a point about changing market conditions.
(C) A chain of reasoning is discussed in order to identify assumptions.
(D) A specific example is presented to illustrate a point made in the previous paragraph.
(E) The main conclusion of the passage is stated.

Correct Answer - D,
Explanation - as mentioned in the beginning of the last para:"The truth of this assertion is borne out by the experience of one regional travel agency", the assertion being:"Evidence from
a number of business case studies suggests that a more (20) important factor in managing growth is the presence of an executive with a clear vision of the business and its market position. If there is also a competent business plan in place, this can assist the executive, but leaders with a strong market vision can easily overcome the lack (25) of a good business plan."
so Para 3 serves an example for the claim made in 2nd para, and D is the closest to our reasoning.
Option A - incorrect, as opposite of what's mentioned is the case.
Option B - incorrect, as the example is mentioned to prove the point that a strong & focussed leader can make any business work in any market conditions.
Option C, E - incorrect, not happening in the 3rd para.

4. The author’s attitude toward the view that business plans are essential is best described as

(A) unequivocal agreement
(B) tentative acceptance
(C) mild skepticism
(D) grudging acceptance
(E) studious criticism

Correct Answer - E
Explanation - author starts the 2nd para with mentioning how strong business plans are important for business growth and then moves on to saying that they dont always guarantee business growth. Later the author points out evidence from different studies supporting the previous claim and mentions that a strong executive leader is needed for good business growth.
Now the attitude of the author doesnt seem to be either A,C,D, as they are very strong emotions which we cannot see being expressed in the passage.
Options B & E seem close, but going with E as it seems more appropriate for the attitude of the author, as he mentions both the sides of a good business plan and what might really help business growth based on evidence.

Q1.
The main idea of the passage can be found from - "Evidence from a number of business case studies suggests that a more important factor in managing growth is the presence of an executive with a clear vision of the business and its market position. If there is also a competent business plan in place, this can assist the executive, but leaders with a strong market vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan." and the example from para3.
Option B is correct

While option E is the nearest contender, it is not the main idea of the passage, as the author intends to disprove the experts. This can be inferred from 3rd para - "The truth of this assertion is borne out by the experience of one regional travel agency. "

Q2.
A. Although the discussion revolves around small businesses, there is no coorelation mentioned.
B. The author tries to disprove this statement and hence can't be true.
C. This statement is not about the business growth but rather talks about success.
D. Correct As mentioned in para1. " if growth is neither sustained nor managed properly, the existence of the business can be jeopardized."
E. This is only an example, this is not a model for the general business growth.

Q3.
Only Option D makes sense.

Point made in the previous paragraph - "If there is also a competent business plan in place, this can assist the executive, but leaders with a strong market vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan."

Example is - "The truth of this assertion is borne out by the experience of one regional travel agency. Although the company did not have even a basic business plan in place, they had a forceful, involved leader who understood the dynamics of the marketplace."

Q4.
A. The author does not strongly agree.
B. Correct We can infer from - "While a strong business plan can help a business grow, a good plan does not ensure growth." that business plans are tentatively essential but not necessary.
C. No skepticism. Author states clearly that business plans are not an essential requirement for business growth.
D. Author is not accepting at all. Infact he is trying to prove the experts wrong.
E. This is extreme. Although author is not in agreement with experts, he is not criticising.

Can you share explanation for Q4?
Can you share OA for 4

Official Explanation

4. The author’s attitude toward the view that business plans are essential is best described as

Difficulty Level: Hard

Explanation

The author states that “leaders with a strong personal vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan.” The argument has reasonable basis and the author provides an example to support this assertion.

Answer choice (A): The author does not agree that business plans are essential, so this cannot be the correct answer choice.

Answer choice (B): The author does not accept the assertion.

Answer choice (C): This author is skeptical, but the skepticism is far greater than “mild,” so this answer choice is incorrect.

Answer choice (D): Again, the author is not accepting of the notion that business plans are the key to effective growth management.

Answer choice (E): This is the correct answer choice. The entire passage is basically a reasoned critique of the assertion that a good business plan is the key to effective growth management.

Hi SajjadAhmad. Please post OE for Q2.

Official Explanation

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements about business growth is likely to be true?

Difficulty Level: Hard

Explanation

Answer choice (A): This is the correct answer choice. In the first paragraph of the passage, the author discusses why proper growth management is “for small businesses...even more critical.”

Answer choice (B): The author references some experts who believe that a solid business plan is vital, but the author’s perspective, supported by case studies and the travel agency example, is that the business plan can be helpful but is not absolutely necessary.

Answer choice (C): While a business leader with a strong vision is more likely to lead a small business to success, the author never goes so far as to assert that success is guaranteed under strong leadership.

Answer choice (D): Like answer choice (C), the language here is stronger than would be justified by the passage. Improper management may jeopardize a business, but there is no implication that failure is assured by poor management.

Answer choice (E): The regional travel agency happens to be the subject of the example presented in the third paragraph, but the author does not assert that regional travel agencies provide a model for general business growth.
