Q1.
The main idea of the passage can be found from - "Evidence from a number of business case studies suggests that a more important factor in managing growth is the presence of an executive with a clear vision of the business and its market position. If there is also a competent business plan in place, this can assist the executive, but leaders with a strong market vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan." and the example from para3.
Option B is correct

While option E is the nearest contender, it is not the main idea of the passage, as the author intends to disprove the experts. This can be inferred from 3rd para - "The truth of this assertion is borne out by the experience of one regional travel agency. "

Q2.
A. Although the discussion revolves around small businesses, there is no coorelation mentioned.
B. The author tries to disprove this statement and hence can't be true.
C. This statement is not about the business growth but rather talks about success.
D. Correct As mentioned in para1. " if growth is neither sustained nor managed properly, the existence of the business can be jeopardized."
E. This is only an example, this is not a model for the general business growth.

Q3.
Only Option D makes sense.

Point made in the previous paragraph - "If there is also a competent business plan in place, this can assist the executive, but leaders with a strong market vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan."

Example is - "The truth of this assertion is borne out by the experience of one regional travel agency. Although the company did not have even a basic business plan in place, they had a forceful, involved leader who understood the dynamics of the marketplace."

Q4.
A. The author does not strongly agree.
B. Correct We can infer from - "While a strong business plan can help a business grow, a good plan does not ensure growth." that business plans are tentatively essential but not necessary.
C. No skepticism. Author states clearly that business plans are not an essential requirement for business growth.
D. Author is not accepting at all. Infact he is trying to prove the experts wrong.
E. This is extreme. Although author is not in agreement with experts, he is not criticising.

Official Explanation

4. The author’s attitude toward the view that business plans are essential is best described as

Difficulty Level: Hard

Explanation

The author states that “leaders with a strong personal vision can easily overcome the lack of a good business plan.” The argument has reasonable basis and the author provides an example to support this assertion.

Answer choice (A): The author does not agree that business plans are essential, so this cannot be the correct answer choice.

Answer choice (B): The author does not accept the assertion.

Answer choice (C): This author is skeptical, but the skepticism is far greater than “mild,” so this answer choice is incorrect.

Answer choice (D): Again, the author is not accepting of the notion that business plans are the key to effective growth management.

Answer choice (E): This is the correct answer choice. The entire passage is basically a reasoned critique of the assertion that a good business plan is the key to effective growth management.

Answer: E

Official Explanation

2. According to the passage, which of the following statements about business growth is likely to be true?

Difficulty Level: Hard

Explanation

Answer choice (A): This is the correct answer choice. In the first paragraph of the passage, the author discusses why proper growth management is “for small businesses...even more critical.”

Answer choice (B): The author references some experts who believe that a solid business plan is vital, but the author’s perspective, supported by case studies and the travel agency example, is that the business plan can be helpful but is not absolutely necessary.

Answer choice (C): While a business leader with a strong vision is more likely to lead a small business to success, the author never goes so far as to assert that success is guaranteed under strong leadership.

Answer choice (D): Like answer choice (C), the language here is stronger than would be justified by the passage. Improper management may jeopardize a business, but there is no implication that failure is assured by poor management.

Answer choice (E): The regional travel agency happens to be the subject of the example presented in the third paragraph, but the author does not assert that regional travel agencies provide a model for general business growth.
