For every order, a certain mail-order company charges a shipping fee of $3 plus an additional $2 if the value of the order is over $50 but not over $100 or an additional $3 if the value of the order is over $100. How much greater are the total shipping fees for 2 orders of $75 each than the total shipping fee for 1 order of $150 ?

(A) $1
(B) $2
(C) $3
(D) $4
(E) $5

The shipping fee for each order of 75 dollars is 3 + 2 = 5 dollars. Thus, the shipping fee for two orders of 75 dollars is 2 x 5 = 10 dollars.

The shipping fee for one order of 150 dollars is the basic 3 dollar fee plus the additional fee of 3 dollars, for a total of 6 dollars.

Thus, the difference is 10 - 6 = 4 dollars.

Answer: D

since they are asking how much greater shouldn't we divide 10 by 6 to get around 2?

Total Shipping fee for 1 order of $150:
$3 + $3 = $6

Total Shipping fee for 2 orders of $75 each:
2($3) + 2($2) = $10

$10 - $6 = $4

(D) is your answer.
