GMAT 640, Lawyer - Profile Evaluation [#permalink]

Hi!

I’m wondering if you could evaluate my profile. :-)

27 year-old male from Indonesia,
GPA 3.23
GMAT 640 Q44 (52%) V34 (71%)
(my first score was 570, the second was cancelled, the third and fourth are 640)

Work Experience:
- 5 years of experience as a lawyer, a mid-associate in one of the top law firms in the country. I have only worked in my current firm and have never worked in another firm or company and never had an internship. I was seconded in one of our clients’ office for 1.5 months last year.

I usually work directly with my Partners with one or two junior associates and/or trainees. Although, there are several projects where I work in a larger team, comprised of more juniors/trainees and senior associates.

I was once appointed as the head of contingent of my firm in the Indonesian lawyers’ sports competition where I lead a team to facilitate the employees that will participate in the competition (including myself).

Education:
- graduated from one of the top law schools in the country.
- represented my school (together with two teammates) and won the national round of a moot-court (court proceedings simulation) competition. I was the top 5 speakers. Our team was defeated in the preliminary of the international round.
- appointed as the person in charge of film-making in the law faculty's film/photography/journalism club, a position made specifically for me by the club president to improve the quality of the club’s film.

Other:
- coached moot-court teams from 2012-2016
- passed the Indonesian Bar Exam
- a certified rescue diver, level 2 certified tap dancer, was addicted to game programming when I was still in junior high school.
- finance a charity for children’s education and was a speaker in an inspiration class for elementary school children. Other than that, I don’t really have any volunteering/social activities.

I intend to apply to Rotterdam (RSM), INSEAD, ESADE and Kellogg.
1. Do you think that it is realistic for me to apply to those schools?
2. Do you have any suggestion of any other good business schools that may better fit my profile?
3. Do you have any suggestion in relation to my recommendation letter or resume?

I really thank you in advance for your evaluation. :-)

Hi there -

Sounds like you've had great work experience! But your academic assessors (GMAT and GPA) are under the average for the top programs - especially Kellogg and INSEAD. Unless you have an incredible personal story, I think those may be stretches and unfortunately we haven't worked with ESADE or Rotterdam so I can't advise much there. Have you tried the GRE? A way to mitigate your GPA is often by taking additional coursework - online even works.

Kindly,
Meredith

Hi Meredith,

Many thanks for your reply.

I’m glad to know that my work experience sounds great. I was afraid that it would look average or just ‘meh’. I was also afraid that being a lawyer will hurt my chances in getting into a business school since I don’t handle many numbers or calculations.

I haven’t tried the GRE. I guess I should consider taking it. However, I heard that usually someone’s GRE score wouldn’t be much different from his/her GMAT score. Is it true?

Noted about the coursework. I looked up some courses that are related to business and found some that are less than 2 months long and only require around 2-3 hours of commitment per week. Do you think taking one of them will be enough to circumvent my low GPA?

Again, many thanks for your advice, Meredith. :-)

Happy to help! As for the GMAT / GRE, often people do better on one or the other. I'd give it a shot :)

Hi ,
you have very good academics and work experience. only your Gmat is not upto that level. It totally depends for which schools you are applying.
you need to write very good essay.

generally B school expects Q and V 80 %
You can easily raise your Q score to 50. Try GMAT club tests. I raised my score using these tests only
