The anser to the question is option C
Bunuel
Zoologist: As part of an experiment, several mature elephants were led to three enclosures- one that contained a distressed calf from the elephant’s herd, one that contained a distressed calf from a different herd, and one that was empty. It was observed that in the majority of cases, the elephants spent more time at enclosures with the calf from their herd than they did at enclosures with the calf from a different herd. This suggests that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

The zoologist's argument would be most strengthened if it were true that, in the experiment, the elephants led to the enclosures tended to spend more time at the enclosures when

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility

Option C should be the answer.
The conclusion is "elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants."
Option C strengthens because it shows that the elephants are otherwise not much motivated to care for the elephants from their own clan.
But when pitted against the elephants from the other herd , the elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants
as the elephants spent more time at enclosures with the calf from their herd than they did at enclosures with the calf from a different herd.

Option A is wrong because it brings in irrelvant information of familiar and unfamiliar zookeepers.
Option B is wrong it does not show how the elephants would react to the elephants of their own herd.
Option D and E are irrelevant.

The zoologist's argument would be most strengthened if it were true that, in the experiment, the elephants led to the enclosures tended to spend more time at the enclosures when

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper

This is out of scope bringing in zookeeper.
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd

Comparison between empty cage and other herd calf cage. But nothing to help strengthen motivation to care for members of same herd.
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure

Correct answer! Strengthens the argument that it cares for same herd calf and spends more time when in close proximity to it, than just seeing it.
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them

out of scope as behavior of the calves is not a factor in the original argument.
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility

out of scope again, only talk about different herd calf. Also behavior of calf similar to option D.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper (Weakens because downplays the effect of elephants being from the same herd)
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd (Doesn't weaken but does not support the conclusion either)
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure (Correct because it suggests that the enclosure doesn't matter, the elephants just wants to take care of the distressed calf from their own herd)
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them (Introduces another factor 'Interest', Weakens because downplays the effect of elephants being from the same herd)
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility (Introduces another factor 'Hostility', Weakens because downplays the effect of elephants being from the same herd)

Elephants spent more time at enclosures with their own herd’s distressed calf than with a different herd’s calf, suggesting greater motivation to care for their own herd members.

A. This relates to the influence of the zookeeper, not the elephants’ motivation toward calves of different herds, so it does not strengthen the core argument.

B. If elephants ignore a distressed calf from a different herd even more than an empty enclosure, this would strongly suggest they care less about other herds — strengthening the argument.

C. This supports the idea that elephants prefer being near their own herd’s calf, but it doesn’t directly compare motivation toward calves from different herds.

D. This suggests elephants respond to calf behavior, which could influence time spent but does not directly strengthen the claim about herd loyalty.

E.This implies elephants might be influenced by calf friendliness, complicating rather than strengthening the argument about herd preference.

Correct option - B.

It shows elephants prefer an empty enclosure over a distressed calf from a different herd, emphasizing their stronger motivation toward their own herd’s calf. This directly strengthens the conclusion.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper - Not Relevant
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd - Does not mention anything about same herd
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure - Further confirms and strengthens the argument that elephants spend more time in enclosure with distressed calf from same herd.
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them - Mentions nothing of being in same herd
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility - Not relevant

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper
Evaluation: This introduces a new variable (zookeepers) that is irrelevant to the comparison between distressed calves from their own herd versus different herds. It doesn't strengthen the conclusion about preferential care.

B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd
Evaluation: The experiment already includes an empty enclosure. The zoologist's argument is about the difference in behavior towards own-herd vs. other-herd calves. Comparing an empty enclosure to a different-herd calf doesn't directly strengthen the claim about preferential care for their own herd. It might show they prefer distressed calves to empty enclosures, but not the specific preference.

C. a distressed calf from the elephants' herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants' herd was visible but outside the enclosure
Evaluation: This option is irrelevant. The core of the argument is comparing reactions to "own herd" vs. "different herd" calves within enclosures. Whether an "own herd" calf is inside or outside isn't the comparison being used to draw the conclusion about preferential care.

D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them
Evaluation: This introduces a new factor: the calf's reaction. The zoologist's conclusion is about the mature elephants' motivation to care. If the calves' reactions influenced the mature elephants' time spent, it could be an alternative explanation for the observed behavior, potentially weakening the idea that the motivation is solely about herd membership. We want to strengthen, not weaken.

E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility
Evaluation: This is the strongest option. The zoologist's conclusion is that elephants care more for their own herd. The premise is that they spend less time with other-herd calves. If the other-herd calves were showing hostility, it could explain why the mature elephants spent less time with them, regardless of their "motivation to care." If, however, the other-herd calves were friendly, and the mature elephants still spent less time with them compared to their own distressed calves, it would strongly support the idea that their motivation is indeed based on herd membership and not on the other calf's demeanor. It rules out an alternative reason for the observed behavior (i.e., the other-herd calf being hostile).

Correct Answer is E

The question asks for a statement that would add value to the conclusion. Let's evaluate each option;
A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper. The passage talks about elephant being friendly to the acquainted ones in it's herf, zookeeper has been no where mentioned in the passage.
B. The enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd. This seems to the best out of the lot as it implies that either the elephants spend time with elephants from their own herd or they go to the one which is empty. They don't spend time with the ones from different herd.
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure. This would not add any substance to the conclusion, if elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd, they would do it irrespective of the enclosures.
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them. This would not add any value because if the elephants' care is attributed to the accommodating nature of the ones in the enclosure than their natural tendency to care for their herd would not be valid.
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility. Both comparisons are about elephants from different herd and not the ones from their herd. Out of scope.

Elephants were led to three enclosures: one with their herd’s distressed calf, one with another herd’s distressed calf, one empty. They spent more time with their herd’s calf, suggesting greater motivation to care for their herd. Which finding strengthens this?

Options
- A: More time with familiar vs. unfamiliar zookeeper.
- B: More time at empty enclosure vs. different herd’s calf.
- C: More time when own herd’s calf is inside vs. outside enclosure.
- D: More time when calf shows interest vs. ignores.
- E: More time when different herd’s calf is friendly vs. hostile.

Analysis
The conclusion links time spent to care motivation for own herd’s calf. Strengthening requires supporting this link or ruling out alternatives.
- A: Zookeeper familiarity affects all enclosures, not herd-specific. Weak.
- B: Empty enclosure preferred over different herd’s calf suggests low motivation for different herd. Moderate.
- C: More time when own herd’s calf is inside vs. outside shows care-driven proximity, not just visibility. Strong.
- D: Calf interest applies to any calf, unrelated to herd. Weak.
- E: Different herd’s calf behavior irrelevant to own herd motivation. Weak.

Final Answer
C: More time when own herd’s calf is in the enclosure vs. outside confirms care motivation.

I’m not sure whether option C is actually correct, since there were a few words I didn’t know. However, my reasoning was that the elephant would likely want to spend more time with the calf (which I didn’t know the meaning of at the time), or at least that the situation would involve something along those lines, even if it wasn’t specified clearly. So, I eliminated any choices that didn’t feel connected to this idea.

the zoologist says elephants care more about their own herd than outsiders.

to strengthen this, we need to show elephants really dont care about outsiders.

option B says elephants spend more time at empty enclosures than with distressed calves from different herds.
this means elephants would rather do nothing than help outsider calves. but they DO help their own herd calves.

this makes the "own herd preference" argument much stronger - they actively avoid helping strangers but will help their own.

the answer is B.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper. Irrelevant.

B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd. This choice does the opposite. It actually weakens zoologist's argument.

C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure. This choice can strengthen Zoologist's argument that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants. Seems logical. Keep.

D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them. We don't know what led mature elephants spend more time in the enclosures. Were they approached or ignored? OFS

E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility. Again, we don't know what led mature elephants spend more time in the enclosures. If at all, a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly then elephants should've spent more time at enclosures with the calf from a different herd. Weakens.

C is the best choice.

Premise:

Time spent elephants => distressed calves from their own herd > calves from other herds.

Conclusion:

Elephants are more motivated to care for members of their own herd.

A. Weakener, by giving another factor for the mentioned phenomena.
B. Irrelevant, Talks about empty enclosure doesn't support conclusion.
C. Strengthens, As it states Elephants spent more time when they sensed calves are distressed.
E and D. Weakener, by giving another factor for the mentioned phenomena.

Hence option C is correct.

IMO, this should be option B.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper - weakens the conclusion, introducing an extra variable
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd - strengthens the fact that they are more motivated to care for their own
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure - not about herd preference, visible vs not is irrelevant
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them - more about the calf not the elephants
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility - again more about the calf not the elephants
