Zoologist: As part of an experiment, several mature elephants were led to three enclosures- one that contained a distressed calf from the elephant’s herd, one that contained a distressed calf from a different herd, and one that was empty. It was observed that in the majority of cases, the elephants spent more time at enclosures with the calf from their herd than they did at enclosures with the calf from a different herd. This suggests that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

The zoologist's argument would be most strengthened if it were true that, in the experiment, the elephants led to the enclosures tended to spend more time at the enclosures when

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility

A. Out of scope, passage not with reference to zookeeper.

B. weakly strength/ negligible strengthen, compared to C option as we are to prove that elephants care for their own members more.

C. Correct, as it shows that they are more inclined to help their own herd calf than the calf which is right in front of them. ANSWER

D. passage denote concern about calf showing interest or not.

E. same situation as D, passage is not about calf's friendliness rather about other elephants caring for calf of different herd.

Kind of question that seeks the best answer between correct answers.

C. is correct, since it reinforces the motivation to care for members, on grounds of accesibility to the calf.

A. Bias for the elephant - weakens the argument.
B. Would hint aversion to the strange calf
D. Bias for the elephant - weakens the argument.
E. None related to the comparison

Here, the conclusion is : Elephants are more motivated to care for members of their own herd than for unrelated elephants.

We came to this conclusion based on the 3 experiments.

We need to find a strengthener ,
POE

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper Irrelavant
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd Hmm, Keep it on hold. So this strengthens it won't care about other herds calf.. removing the commanily. Strengthens
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure We are discussing about in enclouse, Not sure what addon value this brings. OFS
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them So what, Irrelavant
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility So what, Irrelavant

I think the best avaliable choice is B

ANSWER IS C
We need to prove:
Elephants sticking around is really due to "care intent"
Not just other mixed factors (like being purely attracted, curious, scared, etc.)
So the strongest support would be:
When the same group of baby elephants are inside vs. outside
Elephants focus more on caring for the ones inside, showing "care" behavior, not just being drawn to the baby elephants of the same group.

(A) Not related to the caregiving group.

(B) This shows even unfamiliar groups will care, not just same kind. Weakens the argument (only caring for own kind).

(C) indicating elephants don't just stop for same kind, but have a desire to approach and care.

(D) Not the motivation for elephant care.

(E) Focus on strange calves. Not the motivation for elephant care.

Conclusion of the argument : Elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper

This option can be Eliminated as familiarity with the zookeeper has nothing to do with the argument.

B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd

Doesn't strengthen the conclusion. If in the experiment, the elephants led to the enclosures tended to spend more time at the enclosures when the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd, we cannot conclude that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants. We can at best say elephants are not motivated to care of members of another herd. But that's not what has been asked in the argument.

C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure

Correct Option.

This strengthens. Even when the distressed calf from the elephant's herd was outside visible the elephant chose to spend more time in the enclosure. This tells us that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd. Keep C.

D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them

We can eliminate D, as the option doesn't mention which distressed calf are we talking about. Is that from elephant's herd or different herd. Also, the information presented is irrelevant.

E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility

Again, we are comparing two situation in which the distressed calf appeared differently. This information doesn't help conclude on the behavior of the elephant from its own herd.

IMO the correct option is option C

Answer = C

Option C is the only choice which evaluates between a calf of the elephants' own herd and a calf from a different herd, which is mentioned in the argument.

There are three enclosures - where

enclosure 1 contained a distressed calf which belonged to the same herd.

Enclosure 2 contained distressed calf which belongs to a different herd.

Enclosure 3 which was empty.

The experiment was repeated with multiple elephants and their calf’s and in majority of cases , the elephant responded to the distress call of the calf which belongs to its herd More than the distress call of a calf which belonged to other herd.

The experiment outcome : elephant is more motivated to care for members belonging to their herd than others.

Let’s look into the options individually,

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper

The role of zookeeper is not related here. So irrelevant option. Eliminate.

B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd

The comparison is made between empty and occupied enclosure from a different herd. But, elephants majority responded to distress call from their herd. This comparison does not strengthen . Hence, Eliminate.

C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure

This clearly strengthens the phenomenon that elephants wish to interact with the distress call of the calf belonging to its herd. Here, the enclosure contained calf was approached by elephant when compared with the calf present beyond the enclosure but makes a distress call.

D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them.

Calf approaching elephants is no way related to elephants behaviour of responding to distress call. Hence, eliminating it.

E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility

Variation of distress call of someone seeking help seems illogical. No where it’s mentioned as friendly and hostile call of calf. Hence, eliminate.

Option C

We are told:
• Elephants spent more time near enclosures with a distressed calf from their own herd than those with a calf from a different herd.
• The conclusion: Elephants are more motivated to care for members of their own herd.

We are asked: Which option would most strengthen this argument?

To strengthen the argument, we want evidence that the elephants’ preference was really due to social bonds (herd membership) — not other possible factors like enclosure setup, calf behavior, proximity, visibility, etc.

Let’s evaluate each option:

A. They were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper rather than an unfamiliar one.

❌ Irrelevant. The argument is about calf identity, not human interaction. Doesn’t relate to the core conclusion.

B. They spent more time at the empty enclosure than at one with a calf from a different herd.

❌ This would weaken the argument. It would suggest that elephants were avoiding unfamiliar calves or were uninterested — not that they cared more about their own. It shifts the explanation toward avoidance, not preference based on herd.

C. They spent more time when the calf from their herd was in the enclosure than when it was visible but outside the enclosure.

✅ This strengthens the argument. Why?
• It rules out mere visual recognition or familiarity as the full explanation.
• It shows that proximity and access to help mattered — that elephants were more motivated to approach and presumably help their own herd member when they could.

So this supports the idea of a caregiving motivation, specifically when a distressed herd member could be approached — reinforcing the conclusion.

D. The calf appeared interested in the elephants vs. ignored them.

❌ This puts the focus on the calf’s behavior, not the elephant’s motivation. It introduces a new variable that weakens the causal link between herd membership and the elephant’s choice.

E. A calf from a different herd was friendly vs. hostile.

❌ Again, this changes the focus from herd membership to the calf’s behavior. The conclusion is about elephants preferring to help their own, not about whether the calf was nice or mean.

✅ Final Answer: C

The zoologist's argument would be most strengthened if it were true that, in the experiment, the elephants led to the enclosures tended to spend more time at the enclosures when

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper
It is not directly related to the question. Even mentioning "familiar", we can not admit that a "familiar zookeeper" is as important as an elephant from the herd.

B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd
Not really. The argument says that elephants are more motivated to take care for members of their herd, but does not mention that they do not take care of other and neither give a rule like "Herd > Empty > Different Herd". It could even be "Empty > Herd > Different Herd", since we were not given an order for the 3 scenarios, only a order for "From Herd" and "Not from herd".

C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure
Yes, it shows that the behavior of the elephant is based in stay close (and probably taking care) of the calf from the herd.

D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them
It does not strength the argument. It could show that the motivation is not based in the calf being form the herd or not, but in how interested is the calf.

E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility
It does not strength the argument. It could show that the motivation is not based in the calf being form the herd or not, but in how friendly is the calf.

Answer C.

IMO answer B

The argument concludes that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd THAN FOR OTHER ELEPHANTS.

As per the experiment it was observed that in the majority of cases, the elephants spent more time at enclosures with the calf from their herd than they did at enclosures with the calf from a different herd.

So the first part of the conclusion comes from the experiment. But Option B STRENTHENS the comparison part of the conclusion with the other elephants.

Option B ( the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd) establishes the fact that the elephants preferred the empty enclosure than being contained with a distressed calf of another herd. Hence strengthening the author's conclusion that the elephants are motivated to care just for their own herd.

We want to strengthen the conclusion that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

Option A: If it were true, it introduces an alternate factor which might have driven the Elephants' behaviour and actually weakens the argument. ELIMINATE.
Option B: This highlights that when comparing between an empty enclosure and one which has a distressed calf from a different herd, the elephants preferentially went to the empty enclosure. This strengthens the argument, keep it.
Option C: Irrelevant.
Option D: Irrelevant.
Option E: Irrelevant.

Hence answer is B.

elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

Honestly I feel the answer I have chosen is the lesser of two evils. But this question does not have the bulletproof feel of an official question.

A) We are not concerned with Zoo keepers effect on the elephant
B)Maybe the Ele just wanted some alone time. Maybe he preferred the empty enclosed even when there was his own child in it.
C) This shows that the Eel is concerned for the Calf. This option doest create a distinction between the home calf or away calf. But the other options are worse so this must be the answer.
D) and E) Make it about how the calf reacts to the elephant rather than have any factor of the heard involved.

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper. This weakens as zookeeper becomes an alternative explanation.
B. the enclosure was empty than when the enclosure contained a distressed calf from a different herd. comparison with different herd calf is not the subject.
C. a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was in the enclosure than when a distressed calf from the elephants’ herd was visible but outside the enclosure. Correct. This shows the behavior was bcoz of care.
D. a distressed calf in the enclosure appeared interested in the approaching elephants than when the calf ignored them this weakens as behavior of calf becomes a reason.
E. a distressed calf from a different herd appeared friendly toward elephants than when a distressed calf from a different herd displayed hostility calf from another herd is not the subject here.

The answer should be (A)

A. they were encouraged by a familiar zookeeper than when they were encouraged by an unfamiliar zookeeper

- Because according to the statement, these elephants seem to respond in a more positive way to a stronger more familiar social connection.

This seems to support & align with the statement: It was observed that in the majority of cases, the elephants spent more time at enclosures with the calf from their herd than they did at enclosures with the calf from a different herd. This suggests that elephants are more motivated to care for members of their herd than for other elephants.

C option is correct because it strengthens the idea that they are motivated to approach and potentially care for the calf, not just look at it, this shows active concern thus strengthens the argument
