Earlier, I posted an analysis of how many of each DI question type are on the official practice tests:

However, I realized that the actual tests are different; there is consistently (all 6 score reports I reviewed had the exact same breakdown) the same number of each question type on DI — notably, 8 DS on the actual test, instead of 5 or 6 on the practice tests, and only 3 MSR on the actual test (always #4-6 or #5-7). This is helpful info for time management and prioritization for your training — PS (33%) and DS (13.3%) make up 46.3% of your total score.

For RC, there were 13 or 14 questions across 4 passages, along with 9 or 10 CR.

DI Breakdown on Actual Test:
  • 8 DS
  • 5 Graphs and Tables (likely 3 Graphs and 2 Tables, since every practice test had more graphs than tables, but I'd be curious if anyone remembers this split from their actual test)
  • 4 Two-Part Analysis
  • 3 Multi-Source Reasoning

Below is an example report. To view your score report in this table format, click the button where my cursor is:

Probably in the share GMAT Experience forum but I am guessing you may have looked there already?
Basically anything since Dec is likely mostly Focus (though officially classic was kaputted Jan 31).

GMATCoachBen I have seen a similar thing from students (number of each question type on the actual exam). So far I have also seen 8DS and 3MSR. For those of us old-timers who love DS, this is nice to see! DS may continue to be nearly half of the DI section. I also think this is good for test takers because, although many find DS hard, I think from a timing perspective it makes the DI section more manageable since there are many DS questions that can be done pretty quickly.

That's a great question. I'll need to check! GMATCoachBen may have better data since I think he mentioned that he has seen 6 actual score reports and I have seen 3 I think.

Maheshkv ReasonTestPrepBP

All 6 score reports I reviewed had 3 of the 8 DS be "Non-Math Related".

In contrast, the 4 practice tests I just reviewed (#1 and #2) had only 5 or 6 DS, and all were "Math-Related".

By the way, I received an email from GMAC, suggesting that from 1 July, '24, they will be officially dropping "Focus Edition" from the title.

Hence, it will be just "GMAT" :)

===========================================================

Dear Colleague,

At GMAC, we are continuously working to provide the solutions necessary for schools and candidates to discover and evaluate each other easily and efficiently, such as with the introduction of the GMAT™ Focus Edition.

The “GMAT Focus Edition” name served as a crucial distinction between it and the previous version of the GMAT while both were in the market in late 2023 and early 2024.

Now with only one version of the exam available, we are transitioning back to using the "GMAT Exam" name from July 1, 2024 onward.

What is Changing?
The “GMAT Focus Edition” name will revert to the “GMAT Exam.” The only element of the GMAT Focus Edition that is changing is the name. The exam’s structure, content, scoring, and test features will remain the same. Additionally, the existing GMAT Focus Official Prep material will still be relevant to candidates currently studying for the exam.

===========================================================

Thanks!

In the GMAT focus edition, what is the expected spread of questions in RC and CR? And, how many passages (long/short) in RC can we expect? Also, can you provide any URLs to help me understand the split in question types within the DI section?

Data Insights:

From the several practice tests I've taken, the average distribution of question types in the Data Insights section typically looks like this:

  • Data Sufficiency: 6 questions (from 5 to 7)
  • Graphs and Tables: 5 questions (from 5 to 6)
  • Two-part Analysis: 5 questions (from 5 to 6)
  • Multi-source Reasoning: 4 questions (from 4 to 5, once 6)

Additionally, out of these, there are approximately 7 Non-Math Related questions (from 5 to 8) per DI section. None of the Non-Math Related questions were from Data Sufficiency.

Verbal Reasoning:

In the verbal section, I consistently encountered exactly 4 Reading Comprehension (RC) passages, each accompanied by either 3 or 4 questions. The distribution between Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions was:

  • Either 13 RC and 10 CR questions, or 14 RC and 9 CR questions.

This meant I either faced 3 RC passages with 3 questions each and 1 RC passage with 4 questions, or 2 RC passages with 3 questions each and 2 RC passages with 4 questions.

Also, check this post: https://gmatclub.com/forum/gmat-focus-edition-everything-you-need-to-know-408213-580.html#p3377771

Hope it helps.

Hi Metalking,

I'll restrict myself to the verbal section, as that's my area of expertise. You will most likely see:

1. 10-14 RC questions spread across 3-4 passages

2. 9-13 CR questions

The following part of Bunuel's post is incorrect, at least as an indicator of what is possible on the actual GMAT:
Bunuel
Either 13 RC and 10 CR questions, or 14 RC and 9 CR questions.
I'm not sure about how many short/medium/long passages you'll see on the GMAT. I've seen plenty of official practice tests by now, but I keep getting somewhat unexpected inputs from people who've taken the actual GMAT. That is, some test takers report seeing fewer short passages than expected. For example, I got 2 med, 2 long passages (I define medium as ~250-350, long as 350+).

Dear members I have few doubts.
1) for quant practice, is it good enough to practice from free available resources (tag- magoosh, e gmat , math revolution, official questions ) on gmatclub ? Same goes for verbal and DI.

2) Is it safe to conclude that scoring 655 now holds the same benchmark as it was used to be for 700 ?

Hi Can,Will,

1. For verbal, I recommend prioritising official practice material. Unfortunately, it's not possible to say whether that will be enough or not.

2. From what I've seen, 645 is the new 700. Here's what mba.com says about this (article dated November 14, 2023):
Quote:
For example, a score of 645 on the GMAT Focus Edition is equivalent to 700 on the previous scale

Metalking In my analysis of 6 score reports from actual tests:
  • 5 had 4 RC passages, with 13-14 RC questions and 9-10 CR
  • 1 had 3 RC passages, with 10 RC questions

On the Classic edition, the same number of questions counted on every ESR (it was 12 SC, 10 RC, 8 CR).

So, it's possible that one of the passages is Experimental, when we get 4 passages. A student has scored 100%-ile on RC, despite RC mistakes on one passage, which also suggests that the mistakes were on experimental questions.
