I am pretty convinced that with a bit of tweak around the prep, it is totally achievable to get a great score. I would say though that it does need a fair amount of "revamp" of your previous test strategy.

Also, I understand the negativity. If I were applying this year in an incredibly over-represented pool, I'd be upset too.
Did you receive the scores, Souvik????

I am expecting a record breaking score from you too.

GMAC said no curve on the webinar. They did also say that if they see a systemic pattern of lower scores than they may adjust the scoring algorithm but that would only happen later and if there is a pattern. However, the test, questions, and basically everything else besides the cursed whiteboard have not been changed from the test center experience.

Look, it's well and dandy for people who's been doing GMAT questions for fun or tutors who score 770 to score 750 or 730 and say it's not a big deal, but for the rest of us mere mortals, where the margin of error is 20 to 30 points between a T10 and T25, plus everyone who's taken it has gotten a lower or equal score - why is it advantageous to take it now?

Plus the disproportionate of people who've taken it as a tutor or a high scoring "enthusiast" will likely impact the Online GMAT curve event more given the limited number of inputs.

Also, I'm sure those who took it and got a low score isn't posting on the forums, bragging about their score being "fine".

Has anyone confirmed that there is a "curve" being applied on this exam? I'm under the impression that it is the exact same scoring algorithm that is used on the actual GMAT.

bb Found it!! Nothing escapes the history digger lol

Dayum
All these people are great in Verbal.
Quant scores naturally will go down.

I wonder if I should just give it a go. My pockets are empty right now. All these costly B-school applications. Will have to ask my father (and we both know what that means, I need to take a week off to accommodate migraine)

I hope I stay in job. Haven't been paid for three months so... let's hope coronavirus goes away in India sooner.

Meanwhile, it's been 5 business days since I was given a case number by Pearson Vue for "looking off screen" before seeing a single question. Despite sending multiple emails and filling out multiple forms, I still haven't received a word from GMAC or Pearson Vue, so my hope for being granted a reschedule date is dwindling. I've called lots of different phone numbers and waited and waited for Pearson Vue chat agents to respond, to no avail.

Even now, the only form of actual human contact I've received during this entire experience was the one, brief email I received from Pearson Vue Customer Support about the "looking off screen" issue, which included my case number. Not a good look, GMAC--especially when I'm posting real-time updates to GMAT Club about the entire experience.

I hope that I do eventually get a chance to take the GMAT Online myself, but if not, then I guess I can report back to GMAT Club as to what happens when you try to get a full $200 refund from GMAC. : /

I understand and empathise the frustration that you must be going through for a stupid glitch

Anyhow as for your last statement- So you'd try to tell us how GMAC says su*k it in a different way.
I think they will push to another date.
I am from a city where historically TAs sent back the students and reassigned them a new date on the test center. The students only agreed to it.

But luckily, my TA, was very helpful. He knew that the dust and hay caused frustration for me as I am totally allergic, when I saw the score, I was happy to see that 7 in front of my score. Even TA was happy to see the score, could see it. But it was seriously killing me inside to see I missed a 730+ that I had initially set an eye and achieved on practice test

I know not relevant to the conversation, but I do talk a lot lol

- how is it going? How is your score? We got 3 out of 4 reportd from the YouTube video and it is 730, 740, and 750. Are you going to humble everyone???

Haha, unfortunately not! While I was definitely anticipating a bit of a dip, I dropped down a whopping 50 points from my last attempt to a 730. This is actually the score I received when I took the exam with 0 preparation for the very first time many years back. That said, definitely no reason for student concern (as everyone here has shown with their performance - well done everyone!!) as I wouldn't call it an in earnest attempt so much as as an attempt to "feel out the experience" for students - so I'm not too bummed!

Gosh, now I'm wishing I'd given it a practice test or so to knock off some of the rust on pacing and get a hang of this darn whiteboard! Way to go everyone! You've definitely shown that it can be done - whiteboard and all! :)

Would you mind giving a breakdown of your score? Was the drop in verbal or math? Nervous because so many people are saying verbal was so much harder... Math at least you can blame it on the whiteboard : )

Oh absolutely! And fair point - the drop was 100% verbal - so there's no blaming this one on the whiteboard! (Though gosh do I think my Q performance could have otherwise notched up a bit.)

Quote:
Your Official GMAT™ Online Score Results:
Quantitative Section Score: 49
Quantitative Score Percentile: 74
Verbal Section Score: 41
Verbal Score Percentile: 94
Integrated Reasoning Section Score: 8
Integrated Reasoning Score Percentile: 92
Total Score: 730
Total Score Percentile: 96

It's tricky... because I definitely don't want to try to claim that the verbal was "harder" or different in any regard, but like a few of us mentioned in the video, I definitely hit a few questions (darn that lack of ESR to shed some light!) where I didn't feel like there were clearly four wrong answers and one that definitively hit the spot in the way I did for absolutely every question my last sitting and *nearly* every question (a few retired OG questions aside) across official prep materials.

That said, there was definitely a part of me that was feeling over it and ready to game-plan what to do about the whiteboard, lack of break, etc. for students by the time I hit verbal - so again - there are definitely some approach measures and steps I took on test day that I would have yelled at myself if I were a student for approaching the way I did. (Well, maybe not yelled... but strongly suggested reconsidering.)

Again... totally different circumstances from back when I took the test with practice tests and clear preparation behind me rather than using "I look at this stuff every day" as my preparation to go in and "see what's what," so please don't let my performance leave you feeling nervous. Like Souvik mentioned, I think the format is definitely one that can be overcome with the right preparation. Did verbal seem... weird... to me? Honestly, yes. That said, I wouldn't let that deter you from giving this thing your best shot if you're feeling otherwise prepared to do so :)

(And hey, maybe we need to get the real experts with the Online V42s in the conversation here ;))

VeritasPrepHailey wow, that is extremely interesting that your Verbal went down 10 points - I would not have expected that. Also, I will add that it is extremely impressive that you got a V51 on your prior attempt, lol that is like unheard of...

I was hoping Verbal would be at least somewhat comparable to the test center-GMAT since it is not as math heavy. Perhaps it was just a slightly off day compared to your standards?

@everyone please keep the feedback rolling in peeps. These scores are very encouraging, and I am going to start prepping with the online whiteboard so I can take it ASAP! Any other tips for success are highly appreciated!

For those of you who took it, where is the whiteboard in relationship to the question space? Is it on top of the question like a translucent layer? Is it on the right side of the screen and you can see the full question on the left side, or did you have to "tab" back and forth between the whiteboard and the question space?

Oh, totally 100% not past saying it could just have been an off day. Again, if I were taking this as a student with my admissions riding on this, there were several things I would have totally done differently or taken an extra moment to fully reason through. (Though now I'm incredibly curious what 51 to 41 looked like in terms of questions missed, and it will forever haunt me that I won't be able to check out the ESR to see )

The important part (for me at least) was having the ability to start to address a few of the procedural questions that were initially less-than-accounted for in the FAQs and GMAC's responses - so I achieved my objective coming out of the test :)

I definitely don't think anything was intentionally structured differently content-wise. Quant still had several visual, depiction-heavy questions (I know a few people were pondering whether that would change with the online whiteboard format) and verbal seemed to have a pretty usual spread of question structures and error types. Definitely encouraging results on the part of all those who put in the prep time and deserve those encouraging results - so don't be alarmed on my account ;)

The whiteboard is a resize-able window that appears on top of your full-screen test page. You can adjust it to cover whatever portion of the screen you'd like (I opted for the bottom right 1/4 of the screen, just above the button to advance to the next question) but it is not translucent.

Hope this helps!

Extremely helpful, thank you so much for your account! Any test experience good or bad is very helpful in guiding us in our decision to take the test. At the very least, it sounds like you weren’t necessarily hampered in Quant in the same way as the drop might imply. And yes, definitely makes sense that you were focused on the whiteboard experience.

All in all Good to know!

Is it possible to "set up" the whiteboard (resizing to both exam and whiteboard windows to fit screen size) prior to the exam beginning? Thanks

Yep! From what my proctor told me, you can resize the board and get things situated before beginning the first section, but you cannot write on the board before the start of the section.

hey souvik - would you mind shedding some light on what you mean by "revamp"? Specifically regarding whiteboard usage during the quant section - any tips? my fourth sitting in the last 2 months was just cancelled (2nd cancellation 2 days before the scheduled sitting :(

thanks!

In my particular case, this was not true. Even though I didn't see a single question before the proctor ended my session for "looking off screen," I can confirm that I was able to draw, type and make shapes with the online whiteboard tool before the exam started, while the test was showing me a spinning circle aka loading screen.

After all, you can't start taking notes on a question you haven't seen yet...

It's possible that the OnVue whiteboard could be reset / wiped clean again before the exam begins, however: I wouldn't know because I was never given that chance.
