1. Pulitzer is an award, so by "unlike" we compare one award with another award.
Since in A, and B "an author" follows, it becomes a wrong comparison - award vs human. A, B are out.

2. "is awarded" to a man, not to his achievement, so C is out.

3. Not the author of achievement gives the Nobel Prize, he gets it. E is out.

D is perfect

Read the Original Sentence Carefully, Looking for Errors:

"Unlike the Pulitzer ... an author?" Nope. A prize can't be compared to a person. Eliminate (A).

Scan and Group the Answer Choices:

(C), (D), and (E) correctly compare the Pulitzer Prize to the Nobel Prize. (A) and (B) do not. Use this split to begin to eliminate the choices.

Eliminate Wrong Answer Choices:

Eliminate (B). It incorrectly compares the Pulitzer Prize to an author's achievement.

Eliminate (C). It correctly compares the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes, but then it says the prize is awarded "to an author's ... achievement." The prize is awarded to the author and for the achievement.

Eliminate (E). The placement of the modifier "by an author" is unclear. It logically refers to "achievement" but is grammatically referring to "literature." This choice also loses some of the original sentence's meaning because it is no longer clear that the author receives the prize. Here, the Nobel is awarded [to someone or something] because some author has had a lifetime of achievement.

(D) is correct. Despite being a bit wordy, it properly structures the comparison of the two prizes and does not introduce any other errors.

TAKEAWAY: Comparisons must be logical, comparing the same type of thing, as well as grammatically parallel.

Which is given for a specific work - middle men
Unlike the pulitzer should be modified by the nobel prize after the comma - Hence A & B are out.

B. an author's lifetime achievement in literature receives the Nobel Prize - INCORRECT
C. the Nobel Prize is awarded to an author's lifetime's achievement in literature - Awkward wording - INCORRECT
D. the Nobel Prize is awarded to an author who has had a lifetime of achievement in literature - CORRECT
E. the Nobel Prize is awarded for a lifetime of achievement in literature by an author - Nobel prize is awarded to an author and not for a lifetime. - INCORRECT

Hence D is the answer

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



D

Like number 8, this question contains an intro phrase set off by a comma. This time you’ve got to rearrange the rest of the sentence to fit the intro. So what can correctly follow “Unlike the Pulitzer”? You can only compare only similar things—the Pulitzer Prize must be compared to some other prize. In (C), the prize isn’t awarded to an author’s achievement, it’s award- ed to an author. In (E),“author” incorrectly follows “literature,” (“literature by an author”) making it unclear who exactly is doing the achieving. In (D), “author”correctly goes with “liftetime”(in the phrase “an author who has had a lifetime of achievement”). (D) makes it clear whose achievement is being award- ed.

“Unlike the Pulitzer” using Comparison/Modifier error, indicates “The Noble Prize” in the beginning.
Then simply MEANING is the deciding factor. Noble Prize is awarded to a person, not to an “author’s lifetime’s achievement”, so C ruled out. Also in E “by an author” indicates the concerned author is giving the award – which is not the original meaning.

Unlike, like in contrast are indicate parallelism. So here prize should compare another prize, that's why option A&B out.
Option C has two possessive adjective which also redundent. Option E is ambiguous in meaning. So option D is correct.
