Also, if it helps, it doesn't really have to be a hobby. What gives you joy doesn't have to be a "verb". It can be a "noun" too.

I thought long and hard about this essay but it was hard for me to just say that a hobby makes me distinctive. In the end I talked about my culture, how it gives me joy and how it makes me distinctive.

Ya I think this question gives applicants quite a bit of leeway and flexibility. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wrote about a non-professional aspect in this essay 8-)

I think any essay writing about your professional aspect for the "joy" essay is bound to be cookie cutter.Lets face it, $$$ is the main "joy" out of work. There are only so many ways you can twist that concept and the adcoms must have heard all of them.

I agree... plus it wouldn't have been truthful anyway. Work does not give me the most joy that's for sure.

I am very anxious about Haas. Any indication from admissions on when they plan to release R1 interview invites?

the earliest would probably be mid next week based on the adcom's provided schedule of 4-6 weeks..

Straight from their blog:

Quote:
Our Round 1 deadline was October 12—congratulations to all who submitted! We have begun our evaluation process and ask for your patience as we thoroughly review your applications. We will start sending out invitations to interview as soon as possible, typically about 4 weeks after our deadline. Please note that we send interview invitations throughout the round and I want to stress that when you are invited to interview is no indication of how strongly we feel about your application. As multiple readers evaluate your application, it takes time to carefully read each one. We appreciate the time you have spent preparing your applications and we are excited to learn more about you! Good luck!

I'll put my money on Monday. Last year's thread showed the first interview invite going out on Monday the 1st. Could mean they're finalizing the initial batch today with emails to go out Monday. I don't have any inside information, that's just my guess.

Does anyone have a sense for what Haas is looking for in the Employment History section when they ask for "Responsibilities/Key Accomplishments"? How is this different than a basic job description paired with what's on my resume for each position? I don't think they'd ask this if they just wanted a cut and paste job from the resume, but I'm also not really sure what the right way to approach it is.

Thoughts?

Hi guys, I know Haas's dead line is coming up soon. I just finished a blog entry about how I answered the first essay question on Haas application . I think it will be a good idea to share it with people. Here is my blog.

https://essaytricks.wordpress.com/

If you like my post please give me kudos.
Also, if you have any questions or comments about my method feel free to ask me. I am not an admission consultant or anything to that effect. I am just another applicant like most of you.

I hope this is helpful.

Cheers :-D

Any R1 interview invites yet? I'm an alum and I'm pretty sure that kills my chances.

Thanks,
J

Why would that kill your chances?

I just received an email from Haas stating my file was just now deemed complete and is ready to be reviewed by the Admissions committee.

Unless someone's already gotten one, it appears that we might be waiting a little longer to get interview invites. Having said that, I've heard many stories from Haas students about getting invites in December and even a couple days before the January notification deadline. That seems pretty excruciating but I guess we'll just wait and see.

That is f-in gross! Don't they know how stressful this process is? If I didnt already have a couple interviews, I would be loosing my freaking mind!

I am applying in 1st Dec deadline. Any technical or philosophical advice from the people who already applied in earlier rounds? All my essays are ready except one. I am just waiting for my recommendations. I am kind of cutting it close by taking my GMAT on 28th November.

Why are the R2 deadlines for Haas a month before all the other schools ?
This throws a wrench is the otherwise orderly R2 application pattern

Haas is a conscious school. They want to make sure that Haas in not your backup. Probably that's why. Just my guess though.

I think you are still in good shape. All you have to take care of is the GMAT since your essays are almost done.
I still have to take the GMAT ( in a week) and haven't even started any essays. I think I am going to drop Haas from my list of schools because of the early R2 deadline.
Do you guys think it makes sense to apply in round 3 ?

Thanks for the word of confidence. I think it makes sense to apply in R3. They have all these rounds for a reason. Also, please keep in mind that Haas has 4 rounds instead of standard 3.
Also, Haas essays are short (250 words). I really enjoyed writing answers to Haas essay questions because they are de-compartmentalized form of big essays. I think once you start writing it should not take long to finish Haas essays. I wrote these essays when I took break from my GMAT studies. If your recommendations can be ready in time I think you can also go for R2.
All the best !! :-D
