How many hours were Fran and Fred away from home?

(1) They left at 9.30 am on Monday and returned at 9.30pm on Friday.
(2) Their home was empty for exactly four days.

We need to determine the number of hours Fran and Fred were away from home.

Statement One Alone:

They left at 9:30 am on Monday and returned at 9:30 pm on Friday.

Statement one is not sufficient to answer the question. The number of hours would be different depending on whether they return on Friday of the same week or Friday of a different week.

Statement Two Alone:

Their home was empty for exactly four days.

Statement two is not sufficient to answer the question. The number of hours could be different depending on who else live in their house. If they are the only ones who live in the house, then they were away from home for 4 x 24 = 96 hours. However, if someone else also lives in the house, say their children, it is possible that their children return home after 4 days but Fran and Fred were still away from home.

Statements One and Two Together:

Even with the two statements, it is still impossible to tell how many hours Fran and Fred were away from home.

Answer: E
