why -2*(7+2+9) + 3*1

They're using a particular 3-circle Venn diagram formula that lets you calculate how many things are in only one of the three sets when you know how many things in total are in each set, are in pairs of the three sets, and are in all three sets. If you did want to learn more about those formulas, you could look in any resource that lists formulas to deal with 3 overlapping set problems.

I have never once needed any of those Venn formulas on actual GMAT problems (I suppose there's exactly one OG question where a formula could be useful, the one that mentions "virtual reality therapy", but even then you can solve without a formula if you understand Venn diagram principles well). I'd be surprised if the question in this thread was an official GMAT question, so I don't think it's worth worrying about much.

why -2*(7+2+9) + 3*1

Multiple of 2 <100=49
Multiple of 5 <100=19
Multiple of 7 <100=14
Multiple of 2 and 5 <100=9
Multiple of 2 and 7 <100=7
Multiple of 5 and 7 <100=2
Multiples of 2,5, and 7=1

Using the venn diagram formula for 3 circles: (A+B+C)-2*(AB+BC+AC)+3*(ABC), we get (49+19+14)-2*(9+7+2)+3*(1)=49(B).
