Magicien99:
In truth, no one truly NEEDS an MBA. Unlike a JD and an MD, for example, you are not training for a specific certification that would permit you practice in that field. Therefore, there is always a burden on the candidate to explain why they think an MBA would position them to better achieve their goals. In other words, you have to explain convincingly that an MBA would increase the likelihood that you can achieve your entrepreneurial vision. You can argue that you will still pursue it without the MBA, but it would make things far more difficult.
I would not overthink the Plan B response. The interviewer/AdCom just want to know that you are thinking about alternative plans and have the ability to adjust if and when things don't go according to the plan. So, if you were planning to create X startup in Y field, you can always suggest A startup in Y field or X startup in Z field. If it's a question of a short-term goal, you can pick a slightly different function, company or industry to pursue with the ultimate goal of still achieving that entrepreneurial goal in some form or another. The point is, you are illustrating that you are recognizing not everything is linear but that you are prepared to push ahead as needed to be successful in the long haul.
FYI, it would be way easier to come up with specific examples for your specific question if not for the anonymous nature of this thread. Please reach out to us at
