Hello all,

I had seen many posts asking the same question, however, I couldn't figure out what is going wrong with my understanding. I have been giving mocks from past 2 weeks, 9 mocks, but the maximum verbal score I pushed is 32. I was able to get 49 or 50 in quant all the time but verbal is my main backlog all the time, making my score to fall drastically. Can anyone please help me to how to improve my verbal score?

PS: I'm trying hard to improve in CR, have a better standard in SC (not great), comfortable with all kinds of RC's except if the topic is from Humanities.

Hi eswarchethu135,

To start, if you took 9 practice CATs/mocks over the last 2 weeks, then you need to STOP taking CATs for the time being. Each CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to learn the necessary Tactics and put in the proper practice and repetitions - and that training takes time. The CAT will show you whether your studies are helping you to improve or not. As such, you really shouldn't take more than 1 FULL CAT per week.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) Which "brands" of CATs have you taken so far? How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

To answer your questions,

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? - 3 months
2) What study materials have you used so far? Manhattan, e-gmat, veritas prep, mixed materials.
3) Which "brands" of CATs have you taken so far? How have you scored on EACH of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)? - GMAT prep, Experts Global. Below are scores:

GMAT Prep:
Q-50, V-23

Experts Global:

Q-49, V-25

Goals:
4) What is your goal score? - 750+
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT? It's in 3 days. However, with this performance, I'm sure I have to take again.
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School? I don't have any rush, even if not for 2019 intake then I'm ready for 2020 intake.
7) What Schools are you planning to apply to? HEC Paris, EDHEC, AUDENCIA, EMLYON, ESSEC, Trinity Business School, Amsterdam Business School, Copenhagen Business School, Rotterdam Business School, HEC Montreal, Smurfit Graduate Business School.

Hey eswarchethu135,

So possibly more important that what you've been studying (as in what materials), how have you been studying? As in, what are you physically doing when you're studying? What does it look like? How do you structure your time? What do you do when you get a problem wrong? How have you been interacting with non-problem materials (As in not CATs and not practice problems -- think videos and course materials)?

Hi eswarchethu135,

Since you are so close to your Test Date, you should NOT try to learn anything new nor should you try to do too much work (NO more CATs and NO 'cramming'). You would be better served by doing some light review and getting some extra rest so that you can go into Test Day clear-headed and ready to work. It's important for you to use this upcoming Test Day 'event' to your advantage - by learning everything that you can about what Test Day is like for YOU. With that knowledge, you will be better able to train for your next attempt. You should also make sure to note your Score Result (if you decide to cancel your Score, we will still need to know how you scored, including your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores). After Test Day, you should post back here (or you can feel free to PM or email me directly), so that we can discuss the results and how best to proceed with your studies.
