Hi guys.
Consistently scoring 49 in Cat and in official test as well.
The most interesting that I was able to score 49 with little prep. But now when I have solved a lot of questions, know how to find trap in DS, I can not score 50.

What is the magic sauce for hitting 50: strategy, additional prep?

Thank you, by the way what is the average number of wrong answers in test to score 50? Less than 5-7?

Do you try to solve everything or skip 1-2?

Hi edbw,

generally 5-8 wrong answer can be accommodated to score Q50.
Try to solve each questions but if any question is taking more than 3 min then skip
most important thing is to read explanation of all the questions

Hi edbw,

You should try out the MGMAT guides as they are phenomenal and cover the entire syllabus really well. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in quant; a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them. Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Further another advantage of taking many mocks is to build up your stamina. Apart from the GMATPREP tests, taking practise tests of any major GMATPREP company ought to do that.

Lastly I would also encourage you to purchase the GMATPREP QP 1 and the Quant review for some great additional practice.

Hope this helps. All the best.

I will suggest that you solve the gmat club tests and analyze all the answers correct and incorrect and then go through the solutions on the gmatclub forum, you will find lot of shortcuts and tips to solve those questions in much less amount of time. That will help you put more time on hard questions and will increase your points to 50.

You can get 18 to 22 wrong answers and still get over 700+. It's not a matter of how many questions you got right, it's a matter of the difficulty of the questions and how you manage your time. Don't let too many wrong answers in a row. Hope it helps!

My strategy is reading over and over again until I understood all ways to solve questions ( I practiced on GMAT Prep and Quant tests on GMAT Club, they are all useful sources)

Scoring 51 would usually require max 2-4 questions incorrect.
I scored Q51 when I gave in 2011. You might get 50 with maybe 7 questions incorrect too.

What you can do?
1. Analyze in which topics (Algebra/Probability), difficulty level and question Type (PS / DS), you commit mistakes.
If you see a pattern, work on those topics and type with that difficulty

Also categorize each mistake in these:
1. Silly Mistake, (calculation, didn't read question properly)
2. Got stuck somewhere in between
3. Couldn't even start the question. No clue

For mistake 1, you just need lots and lots of practise with time and exam pressure.
For mistake 2 & 3, you should read math theory and formulas for that topic.

Hope this helps!
