Hi relangi,

Eight years is not an outlier, and you should be fine at most schools on that count. On second MBA, best way to check for eligibility is to browse FAQs in the admissions section of your target school’s website. If you don’t find anything there, drop an email to the school. And as mentioned, you need to explain why you’re keen on a second MBA. You may find this useful in this regard:

Hi,

I am 31 years old now and i would like to do an MBA either from Canada (preferably) or USA. I have 8 years of work experience as Key Account Manager (sales) in one of the best lubricants companies in the world.

Coming to my education qualification, Graduation - B.Sc., and Post- Gradution - MBA (specialization - Oil & Gas marketing Mgt).

Please advise if am eligible to do a full time MBA in one of the top B-schools in either in Canada or USA.

Regards
Ramesh

Hi Ramesh,
Agree with advise given above. You should be more concerned about a second MBA than your age. It is a common question to ponder but there is nothing to worry at all. Just by a quick search within gmatclub you will find so many expert replies to this age issue.
Canada will be a good choice over all, buddy ! Haskayne School of Business in Calgary will be best for you if you wish to continue in Oil & Gas. Not the best industry to be in right now :-D .
Hope this helps. Get in touch if you need any help.

Best,

No you should be fine to apply. Just like at any stage in life when you apply you will have to make the case of why right now is the ideal time to apply. So make sure this is crystal clear, in particular I would hone in on the impact an MBA could have on your career that continuing to work could not. Ultimately if you are a qualified an impressive candidate a school will find a spot for you.

Hi Ramesh,

The short answer is yes, you are eligible.

There are three things you need to be aware of:

1) The number of people who are over 30 who actually apply to business school is also small - so obviously, fewer people get admitted.

2) One of the challenges older applicants face is that they are expected to have more accomplishments.

3) Another challenge older applicants face is that - business schools are typically good at placing their students in entry level positions, but older applicants expect to be placed in mid-senior level roles after their degree. This gap in expectations creates a problem for the business school.

I've written a blog post with application tips for MBA candidates who are over 30. Please go through it, and let me know if you have more questions. Also, feel free to set up an appointment using the link below if you want to discuss over phone.

Regards,
Karthik
