So I am... Yesterday

That's a mismatch - - eliminate B and E

A-- I had too many chocolates is simple past ( not past perfect as no verb is with Had.). So the sequencing is not clear.

C--> have had is present perfect, which is non - sensical here. We need to show that action of eating chocolate finished.

D is had had.--> Past perfect, which clears up the sequencing.

So D IMO

Consider kudos if that helped.

I had too many chocolates, so I was too full to eat dinner yesterday.

A. had too many chocolates, so I was

B. had too many chocolates, so I am

C. have had too many chocolates, so I was

D. had had too many chocolates, so I was

E. have too many chocolates, so I am
Choice D describes the correct sequence of events. Hence answer is D

Solution:

I had too many chocolates, so I was too full to eat dinner yesterday.

A. had too many chocolates, so I was WRONG! The sequence of events is not appropriate.

B. had too many chocolates, so I am WRONG! I am does not fit with "yesterday"

C. have had too many chocolates, so I was WRONG! The sequence of events is not appropriate.

D. had had too many chocolates, so I was RIGHT! The verb tense here is appropriate.

E. have too many chocolates, so I am WRONG! The tense used is not proper. Secondly, I am does not fit with "yesterday"

There is only 1 action in the past and that is eating chocolates. The other action did not happen. So why is past perfect used?
Experts, could you please help us with this?
