The total apples picked by Larry should be in the 5 hours, not in 1 hour. I did this interpretation. Why is it wrong?

Please re-read the solution. Larry’s rate is x apples per hour, and we are considering the total number of apples picked in 5 hours, which is 5x.

I did not quite understand the solution. In the 1st column, we need to mark apples per hour and not the total number of apples.

Not sure what your doubt is. The question clearly defines the first column as a rate (apples per hour), and the solution correctly uses it as such. There’s no confusion between rate and total in the solution.

Hi,
I did end up with the same 5x and 6x relationshiop between Larrys work and Garys Rate. However, when picking the solutions I first started by looking which values could work for Larrys rate (must be mult of 5) [only 65 and 390 are valid options at this point]. Then I worked backwards 65, by figuring out what x must be and then what 6x must be. Since both values are in answer choices (65 and 78), those must be the correct ones.

Is there a faster way to immediately recognize the numbers that satisfy the ratios 5x and 6x, so as to not have to waste valuable time eliminating answer choices?

Regards,

Larry’s total must be a multiple of 5 and Garry’s rate must be a multiple of 6. In the options, the only multiples of 5 are 65 and 390. 390 can’t work because there’s no larger matching value for Garry. That leaves 65 for Larry, and the only number greater than 65 that fits is 78. So the correct pair is 65 and 78.
