1 - Data is plural. The singular form is datum. A,B and C out
2- This is not conditional, then "if" in B and D out

this isnt a GMAT like question. First of all data in US usage has diverse meanings. It is used as a replacement word for "information" . Second the data ( datum) is of Latin origin (debated). The question does not make it clear as to what the data here is referring to. It could be information( which is non countable and thus has no plural form). And the usage of "datum" is obsolete in US.

conclusion- dont waste your brains on this one.

E is the right answer. Even if this is not an official question, still GMAT always prefers the usage of data in the plural sense. Let us get this from this question and move on.

Data can be plural and singular. So rejecting option A on this ground is absurd.
Can anyone please help.

Ideal way for an IT professional to protect data is to periodically back it in a pre-formatted disc.

A. to periodically back it in a pre-formatted disc--> "data" is plural of "datum"
B. if it is quickly backed in a pre-formatted disc
C. for it to be backed periodically in a pre-formatted disc
D. if he data is periodically backed in a pre-formatted disc
E. to have them periodically backed in a pre-formatted disc --> correct

Option A contains split infintive, that's why it's wrong.
Split infinitives are wrong in gmat.
