If a number between 1/2 and 1 is selected at random, which of the following will the number most likely be between?

(A) 1/2 and 3/5
(B) 3/5 and 5/8
(C) 5/8 and 3/4
(D) 3/4 and 5/6
(E) 5/6 and 1

The number will most likely be between the largest range.

(A) 1/2 and 3/5 --> range = 3/5 - 1/2 = 1/10;

(B) 3/5 and 5/8 --> range = 5/8 - 3/5 = 1/40;

(C) 5/8 and 3/4 --> range = 3/4 - 5 /8 = 1/8;

(D) 3/4 and 5/6 --> range = 5/6 - 3/4 = 1/12;

(E) 5/6 and 1 --> 1 - 5/6 = 1/6.

Answer: E.

Bunuel : I didn't understand why have you considered largest range here ?

(E) 5/6 and 1

I found this quite peculiar

number is btw 0.5 and 1, i just went with brute force here

(A) 1/2 and 3/5
0.5 and 0.6

(B) 3/5 and 5/8
0.6 and 0.62

(C) 5/8 and 3/4
0.62 and 0.75

(D) 3/4 and 5/6
0.75 and 0.83

(E) 5/6 and 1
0.83 and 1

Only E was covering the maximum values

More chance of finding a number btw 0.5 and 1

It's more likely you'll get a number from larger range then from a smaller range, no? For example, if you pick an integer at random, what's more likely that it's from 0 to 10, or from 0 to 5?
