I'm curious what they mean by "ordinary multiplication". Is there some kind of extraordinary multiplication I'm not familiar with? :)

The answer is E, since 3*1 = 3 and 0*3 = 0, and 3/1 = 3 and 0/3 = 0, so we can't tell if the operation is division or multiplication.

If △ represents either ordinary division or ordinary multiplication, which does it represent?

Explanation:

(S1) 3△1 = 3
3*1=3 possible
3/1=3 possible
S1 is insuffficient

(S2) 0△3 = 0
0*3 = 0 possible
0/3 = 0 possible
S2 is insuffficient

Hence E is the correct answer IMO
