FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Back at it |
After an intense week of exams and a relaxing (but too short!) Easter break, we are back in the saddle at IMD today. You can sense that everyone is in a better mood and feeling refreshed after a much-needed rest. Some people took the opportunity to take a trip somewhere, others chose to stay in Switzerland and just unwind, but everyone seems to have made the most of the rare opportunity to take some time for themselves. That said, IMD sure knows how to keep tugging at the reins. We did have some readings to do in preparation for our International Political Economy class, which started today. On top of that, the unlucky ones like me were assigned a presentation topic (which was only given to us in the middle of exam week!). The presentation has to be delivered tomorrow - only the second day after coming back from break! It seems the pace after Easter will continue to be pretty accelerated, but in the end that’s what IMD is all about! And if this morning’s Political Economy class is any indication, Module Two will bring some very interesting class discussions and food for thought! Marcelo |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Restart after the holiday... |
...with full speed. That was an element from the stories of the previous years’ students, which was very hard for me to believe in. Today, I have realized, that this is absolutely true, and I have the feeling, that we will have quite probably the toughest two months of the program until the end of June. We started today our International Economic Policies course with Carlos Braga. He is an economist with huge personal experiences for example about the meetings during the 2008 crises in the World Bank, so I have very high expectations for this course. Especially, because we have to invest a lot into the preparation for these classes in the form of readings, group works and individual essays. How the holidays were spent? It seems this question was relevant only for a really short time, as we have to focus again on our studies and career related questions. András |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: A multitude of perspectives |
This week we started a new class – International Political Economy – with prof. Carlos Braga. I may be a bit partial, since he is Brazilian, but even just three sessions in this has been one of my favorite classes so far. We have been taking a hard looking at some major world trends, looking at some interesting data points on globalization, the effect of increasing interconnectedness in world trade, the implications for development etc. We have been asking ourselves some big questions, which I’ve been finding extremely stimulating. Perhaps what I have enjoyed the most is that I am really getting to hear the different perspectives from my classmates. While there has been no lack of contribution and knowledge sharing up until now, I really believe we are reaching a new level. All of the topics we are talking about have multiple sides, and no easy answers. Inevitably, an argument that one student raises strikes a chord with another student from a different background and with a different opinion. You can see the enthusiasm as other people raise their hands, eager to share their perspective, and with every comment comes a new angle to the conversation. Prof. Braga is also masterfully skilled at facilitating the discussion, so we are learning a lot from him, but he's making sure we are learning from each other as well. Usually I find it frustrating when I leave the class without a definite answer to a topic - but in this case I’ve had the opposite feeling. I want to keep thinking about it more and more. And based on the ongoing discussions during the breaks and during lunch, I think my classmates feel the same way. Powerful stuff! Marcelo |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Why I could hardly negotiate a good deal in the souq of Muscat? |
I have spent quite some time in Oman due to work, but I have never thought, that I will receive the key info about why I could hardly negotiate a really good deal in the souq (market) of Muscat. We have the two days negotiation course with Prof. Luis Almeida Costa, where we receive enormous amount of useful information and good tips for auctions, bargaining processes and negotiations. I think this part is really essential for all of us as future managers and leaders. But I received the most interesting piece, when he asked, how the salesman in the markets of the Arab world are handling asymmetric information about buyers, and sharing this information with each other to be able to make a more successful bargaining. As I have spent quite some time in Muscat I have some personal experiences, that generally I could reach the same price reductions in most of the cases. Today it became clear, that when I received the colored bags with the products I bought, the color of the bag was the message to the other shop owners about my bargaining habits. Now I understand much better my past experiences. By the way I made my best bargaining, when I bought something, which I really did not want to buy... András |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Ramping up for Round Two |
One week back from our short spring break and we are already at full speed. In fact, it appears we have even more work assigned compared with the first semester, but we are certainly better at managing it. I am happy that we are having more and more sessions focused on the career search as well as more high-level guest speakers from recruiting companies. The only problem I have, is that each time we have a new speaker I get a new idea about where I want to go and what I want to become. But, we are at a time where we are being asked to focus more on our target industries. I will have my first one-on-one meeting with career services next week where we will chart out a personal strategy for my job search, application, interview and negotiation process. I will go well prepared after completing a comprehensive set of exercises to define my skill set, personal strengths, desired sectors, companies, alumni contacts and tailored contributions. We will also have more alumni coming in the next couple of weeks to give us insight into some of the larger recruiting companies where they now work, advising us on application and interviewing techniques. In summary, I feel very satisfied with the efforts thus far on the career side of things, and I know that this will move ever faster as times goes by. |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Weekend: too short |
Another Monday at IMD, and another weekend that came and went in a flash. When I ask my classmates how their weekend was, I always get the same answer: “too short!” I If I had a dollar for every time I hear that answer I would be a very rich man! This was an especially short weekend for me. We had an all-day negotiation workshop on Saturday, and I had a session with my PDE analyst on Sunday, so I spent my fair share of time down here at IMD. It’s only been one week since we came back from Easter break, but it’s already clear many of us are already longing for another break. I‘ve personally had a bit of a sluggish start for Module 2 in terms of productivity... But the work won’t stop coming, so I need to get in gear fast, or else I will keep making things harder for myself! Marcelo |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Swamped again |
The Easter break feels like a distant memory now, and I feel like I am already totally swamped again. A leadership essay to turn in tomorrow, a Political Economy essay to turn in on Monday, a Negotiation essay and a Marketing assignment to start working on... all on top of the usual readings and case study preparations. It feels like mid-February all over again. I heard it multiple times before coming to IMD: “the first three months are the hardest!” Based on that information, I was assuming these coming months would become easier! Well, it certainly doesn’t look like that will be the case! Don’t get me wrong I am still very much enjoying the new classes that have been starting, and I am actually looking forward to a few of the assignments we will soon have to do (like the innovation challenge!) But I sure wouldn’t mind a slightly slower pace every once in a while, so I could maybe watch some Champions League soccer without feeling guilty! Marcelo |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: New Excitement |
We learned in more detail today about our upcoming projects, discovery expedition and ICP options and I am thrilled. Everything sounds so exciting and I feel a new boost of energy. I do feel a bit of sadness that the first module passed by so quickly. It was such a rich experience and I feel that I will be peeling back the layers of impact for years to come. At the same time, our second module is well under way and we learned today about multiple opportunities that we will have to work with and present to the many executives that will be on campus over the next few months. It is part exciting and part nerve-wracking to think about all of the face-time we will have. I feel a lot of weight on my shoulders to be at my best in these upcoming events, as this is the first time that IMD is having the MBAs be more integrated with their executive programs, it is a huge responsibility for us to prove that it can work and that we can all benefit from the process. We also learned about how the discovery expedition will allow us to network with IMD corporate partners in the destinations where we are going as well as allow us to meet with alumni at planned receptions. I feel like the program is pulling out all of the stops for us, to give us so much access and opportunity. With great gifts come great responsibility! Ashley Silver |
FROM IMD Admissions Blog: Ineffective leadership analyses: sent |
We had a very intense week with many sessions, even starting a new course, Innovation. With two presentations to be prepared (and finally one presented) and a career counselling session. This last one was a great surprise for me, because it helped me a lot to set my focus and plan my next steps appropriately. But my biggest headache was the ineffective leadership analysis during the week. I took a real story from my past, in which I had some real questionmarks, so I put a lot of efforts into that to be able to take out as much as possible. It took quite a lot of time, and now it was a very good feeling to push the "send" button in my email box. I will be very interested, what will be the feedback of my coach. On the other side, it was also a positive event, why I could not finish earlier, because yesterday the pharma cluster had an opportunity to meet Marije Van Weelden, an Alumni from 2010, who shared many useful information about the pharma industry and even some career tips for our future. That was a great session, I would like to thank Marije in the name of the whole group all the very useful advices and the very good wines we could taste during the session! András |
