1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Chinese authorities have the best arrangements for natural catastrophes such as earthquakes. ~Incorrect, there is no mention that they have the best arrangements for natural catastrophes.

B. Strange behavior of animals helps save thousands of human lives. ~ Correct, refer to the line "What gave the game away, according to the Chinese authorities, was the strange behavior of animals such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses." Using strange behaviour of animals thousands of people were evacuated before the earthquake in 1975 in China.

C. During the 1970s, earthquakes were very common in China. ~ Incorrect, only one incidence of the earthquake is mentioned.

D. Evacuation of people before the earthquake was a lucky coincidence ~ Incorrect, It is mentioned that it may be a lucky coincidence, we can't conclude that it was a coincidence or not on the basis of passage.

E. Chinese read animal behavior better than their Western counterparts ~ Incorrect, although Chinese were able to evacuate people before the 1975 earthquake using strange animal behaviour, there is no mention that there western counterparts read animal behaviour inferiorly than them.

2. Which of the following statements is best supported by the passage?

A. Any natural occurrence that the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment cannot detect can be detected by animals. ~ Incorrect, refer to the line "It seems unlikely that these animals could have detected seismic “pre-shocks” that were missed by the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment that clutters the world’s earthquake laboratories". The detection is made only about the seismic pre shocks and not other natural occurrences.

B. The world’s earthquake laboratories are not producing the desired results. ~ Incorrect, the result of earthquake laboratories in predicting earthquake were delayed than the identification by the strange animal behaviour, but we don't know that they are not producing the desired results.

C. Many animal species have the ability to detect natural occurrences under the earth. ~ Correct, refer to the line "And the fact that many animal species behave strangely before other natural events, such as storms, and that they have the ability to detect others of their species at distances that the familiar human senses could not manage, is well established." Many animal species such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses, exhibit strange behaviour before other natural events because they can feel and understand vibrations that are transmitted through the ground using extra-sensory perception.

D. Animals exhibit different strange behaviors in response to different natural events. Incorrect, animals exhibit strange behaviour before other natural events, but it is not mentioned that for every different natural events that exhibit different strange behaviour. example one behaviour for earthquake and one for storms this is incorrect.

E. Animals' ability to detect natural occurrences is not yet established. ~ Incorrect, refer to the line "And the fact that many animal species behave strangely before other natural events, such as storms, and that they have the ability to detect others of their species at distances that the familiar human senses could not manage, is well established"

3. The following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT

A. Animals possess extra sensory organs than humans do. ~ InCorrect, it is mention that these animals have a kind of extra-sensory perception due to which they are able to detect natural occurances earlier.

B. Examples of animals that can predict natural occurrences like earthquakes and storms include rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses. " Incorrect, it can be inferred from the line "And the fact that many animal species behave strangely before other natural events, such as storms," that many animals can predict events like earthquakes and storms, these animals are mentioned in the first paragraph "was the strange behavior of animals such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses."

C. Research in animal behavior might help save people’s lives during catastrophic events ~ Incorrect, Refer to the line "And the fact that many animal species behave strangely before other natural events, such as storms, and that they have the ability to detect others of their species at distances that the familiar human senses could not manage, is well established" Since it is an established fact, than further research in animal behaviour will help to detect these catastrophic events early and save people lives.

D. Chinese researchers have made the best efforts to study animal behavior. ~ Correct, It can not be inferred that Chinese authorities have made the best effort to study animal behaviour, as we don't know the efforts made by the other country's reseachers.

E. According to Western scientists, earthquakes are unpredictable. ~ Incorrect, mentioned in the passage "Western scientists regard earthquakes as unpredictable"

1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Chinese authorities have the best arrangements for natural catastrophes such as earthquakes.
too extreme a statement that the Chinese authorities have the 'best' arrangements

B. Strange behavior of animals helps save thousands of human lives.
clearly evident sing the facts presented in paragraph 1..CORRECT answer

C. During the 1970s, earthquakes were very common in China.
No such inferences can be drawn

D. Evacuation of people before the earthquake was a lucky coincidence
It can't be taken as true, as the Chinese authorities were wary about the strange behavior of animals such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses prior to occurrence of earthquakes

E. Chinese read animal behavior better than their Western counterparts
can't be inferred as true, as such deduction can't be ascertained

2. Which of the following statements is best supported by the passage?

A. Any natural occurrence that the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment cannot detect can be detected by animals.
can't be taken as true in respect of 'any' natural occurrence

B. The world’s earthquake laboratories are not producing the desired results.
Not true for 100% of the earthquake occurrences

C. Many animal species have the ability to detect natural occurrences under the earth.
As exemplified in the paragraph 1, the ability to detect natural occurrences under the earth is documented..enabled the Chinese researchers to predict the disaster and save lives

D. Animals exhibit different strange behaviors in response to different natural events.
No such conclusions can be drawn using the facts in the passage

E. Animals' ability to detect natural occurrences is not yet established.
Paragraph 2 highlights that the ability is well-established.

3. The following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT

A. Animals possess extra sensory organs than humans do.
Highlighted in the end of paragraph 2

B. Examples of animals that can predict natural occurrences like earthquakes and storms include rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses.
Highlighted in lines 6-7 of paragraph 1

C. Research in animal behavior might help save people’s lives during catastrophic events
can be inferred using the facts presented in paragraph 2

D. Chinese researchers have made the best efforts to study animal behavior.
this 'extreme' option can not be inferred as no such facts presennted in the passage..CORRECT answer

E. According to Western scientists, earthquakes are unpredictable.
highlighted in lines 4-5 of paragraph 3

IMO, the correct sequence of answers will be BCD for Q.1,2,3

1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Chinese authorities have the best arrangements for natural catastrophes such as earthquakes.
'Best' is too extreme and we cannot conclude so

B. Strange behavior of animals helps save thousands of human lives.
True, " What gave the game away, according to the Chinese authorities, was the strange behavior of animals such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses."

C. During the 1970s, earthquakes were very common in China.
We do not know about the frequency

D. Evacuation of people before the earthquake was a lucky coincidence
This is not certain as it could also be due to animals' extra sense as indicated by the passage. It could be due to their extra perception so nothing definitive can be said about coincidence

E. Chinese read animal behavior better than their Western counterparts
We do not know how Western counterparts read the behaviour. All we know is that chinese did so so we cannot conclude this

Ans B

2. Which of the following statements is best supported by the passage?

A. Any natural occurrence that the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment cannot detect can be detected by animals.
This is too extreme because it says 'any' and we cannot be sure about that

B. The world’s earthquake laboratories are not producing the desired results.
"“pre-shocks” that were missed by the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment that clutters the world’s earthquake laboratories" indicates this

C. Many animal species have the ability to detect natural occurrences under the earth.
We cannot conclude anything about the quantum of animals who can do so

D. Animals exhibit different strange behaviors in response to different natural events.
We do not know how they react to each natural event

E. Animals' ability to detect natural occurrences is not yet established.
"Such observations have led some to suggest that these animals have a kind of extra-sensory perception" is a speculation and their ability to detect catastrophes is not established

Ans B

3. The following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT

A. Animals possess extra sensory organs than humans do.
"What is more likely, though, is that they have an extra sense—a form of perception that people lack" indicates this

B. Examples of animals that can predict natural occurrences like earthquakes and storms include rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses.
", was the strange behavior of animals such as rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses" suggests this

C. Research in animal behavior might help save people’s lives during catastrophic events
"Such observations have led some to suggest that these animals have a kind of extra-sensory perception" suggests that there is speculation they have extra sense which also suggested by strange behaviour so certainly research into this can help

D. Chinese researchers have made the best efforts to study animal behavior.
'Best' is too extreme and cant be said for sure

E. According to Western scientists, earthquakes are unpredictable.
Directly stated in passage

Ans D

Explanation

1. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

Explanation

The passage discusses how tens of thousands of people were evacuated from Haicheng, China, a few hours before a large earthquake struck the city, and how the Chinese authorities attributed the evacuation to the strange behavior of animals like rats, snakes, birds, cows, and horses. The passage also notes that many animal species behave strangely before other natural events, such as storms, and that they have the ability to detect others of their species at distances that humans cannot manage. The passage suggests that animals may be able to feel and understand vibrations that are transmitted through the ground and that this ability may help them detect natural events like earthquakes. Therefore, the passage implies that the strange behavior of animals helped save thousands of human lives in Haicheng, making (B) the correct answer.

The other answer options are incorrect. (A) cannot be inferred from the passage since the passage only discusses the evacuation of Haicheng and not the arrangements for natural catastrophes in general.

(C) is not mentioned in the passage, and (D) is contradicted by the passage, which suggests that the evacuation was not a lucky coincidence but was based on the strange behavior of animals. Finally, (E) is not supported by the passage, which does not compare the abilities of Chinese and Western authorities to read animal behavior.

Explanation

2. Which of the following statements is best supported by the passage?

Explanation

A. Any natural occurrence that the sensitive vibration-detecting equipment cannot detect can be detected by animals.
This option is not supported by the passage. The passage only mentions earthquakes and how animals' ability to feel and understand vibrations transmitted through the ground might have enabled them to detect seismic pre-shocks.

B. The world’s earthquake laboratories are not producing the desired results.
This option is not supported by the passage. The passage does not mention any shortcomings of earthquake laboratories.

C. Many animal species have the ability to detect natural occurrences under the earth.
This option is supported by the passage. The passage explains that many animal species behave strangely before natural events, such as storms, and that they have the ability to detect others of their species at distances that the familiar human senses could not manage. The passage also suggests that animals might have an extra sense to perceive vibrations transmitted through the ground.

D. Animals exhibit different strange behaviors in response to different natural events.
This option is not supported by the passage. The passage only talks about animals' strange behavior before natural events in general and does not provide any examples of different behaviors exhibited by animals in response to different events.

E. Animals' ability to detect natural occurrences is not yet established.
This option is not supported by the passage. The passage suggests that animals' ability to detect natural occurrences, including earthquakes, is well established.

Explanation

3. The following can be inferred from the passage EXCEPT

Explanation

The passage states that the Chinese authorities were able to evacuate the people of Haicheng in 1975 because of the strange behavior of animals that they observed. However, the passage does not mention Chinese researchers making any particular effort to study animal behavior or how they compare to researchers from other parts of the world. The other answer choices are all supported by the passage.

"Such observations have led some to suggest that these animals have a kind of extra-sensory perception"

(A) can be inferred from the above quoted text from the passage. It is just a change of words without changing the context.
