This question is on an old GMAT paper test. It is not fake. However, there are multiple transcription errors that throw it off, notably "their" instead of "there" and "hotel" instead of "hotels." According to the answer key, the answer is C.

In the 1890's workers were drawn to Miami from the Bahamas by the promise of the resort hotels that would have work from them.

a) of the resort hotels that would have work from them
b) of there being work for them in the resort hotels
c) of work in the resort hotels
d) for working in the resort hotels
e) to have work in the resort hotels

I am confused between E and C. Please explain why E is incorrect.

You are thinking about it the wrong way. The wrong answers in SC aren't necessarily "wrong" the way that wrong answers are wrong in CR or RC. They're just not as good as the right answer. C is better than E. It's not as if E sounds freakishly awful or anything. It's just longer than C, and C is correct grammatically, idiomatically, and logically. So C wins.

dharam44 well, my philosophy has gotten me a 51 subscore in the verbal section multiple times so at least it works for me. ::shrug:: It's a shame you don't see why it's helpful. It's some of the best advice anyone could give you about this test.

And for the record, it is rude replies like yours that keep me from commenting on these forums often. After tutoring for this test since 2001 and taking it 13 times and scoring 780-790 every time, I have a wealth of advice and knowledge that could really help people on the GMAT, but entitled and rude people like you make me not want to share it. I have learned my lesson. I won't comment on these forums again.

@ Formermember99 :D :D :D :D :D I am sorry, I never wanted to be rude to anyone on this entire planet.

Nevertheless, It's completely your choice weather you want to reply. I just share my honest opinion.

Your take on this question please.... In Z P were drawn from Q to Y by promise of .....work ? Can work give promise ? Does the promise of resort hotels not make more sense ? I went with A. Why is A wrong ?????? GMATGuruNY DmitryFarber VeritasKarishma

Hi experts,

Can someone please shed some light on why option C is correct and other options are wrong? Thanks
